I know this is not a racing related question, but do the 2.4 V6 Probe motor have some known weak points? Somthing that could cause noise when cold, lifters or bearings? Car is a -94.

2.4???? Do you mean the 3.0 Hans? If so, that is probably the best V-6 engine FoMoCo (or anyone else)has ever built. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." I will take a look at the car tomorrow. Is the 3.0 the only V6 in the Probe? Thanks Hans

I have a friend who has a probe V6, its OHC but I cant remember displacement I think its 2.5L. He has had a lot of trouble with oil galleries in the head leaking (could be an isolated case) but its giving him headaches. If it is the best V6 ford ever made they shouldnt they thank Mazda for helping them design it? Not sure what they use in the modern cougars, but its sure a revvy little engine, 170hp ish? My old 2000 Mustang with 190hp essex 3.8 felt better to drive (more low end grunt). Im sure there are lots more perf parts available for the 3.8 although its an older OHV design.

3.0 is OHV and is a FoMoCo engine. I know it was in 90-92 Probes, but when FoMoCo went to the 626 platform in 1993 I believe the dropped the 3.0 for the 2.5 Mazda V-6 engine. I just now noticed that Hans typed 94 as the year. I thought it was a 91. The 3.0 was the primary powerplant for the Taurus/Sable and V-6 for the Rangers.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." Well i had a look at the car today, turns out that the noise only occurs after a longer period of non activity.Like weeks or a month. We suspect that a lifter bleeds of after this time and creates the noise. If you drive it every day it is fine. The owner decided not to do anything at this time. It is indeed a 2.5l(152 cid)DOHC 24 valve Mazda motor. Thanks.------------------

I just remembered this, The Probe has two types of oil filters...and both will work. If you use the wrong one you will get a lifter noise.Did this problem start after an oil change? I have run into this more then once. The first time I almost replace the lifters before I found out about this. The correct oil filter fix this problem. Hmmm... I must check if the guy changed the oil and filter just before this noise came. Thanks[This message has been edited by Hans olsson (edited 03-29-2003).]
