A while back I bought a rebuilt late model ford gear reduction starter. I'm just getting around to installing it and I can't! The raised lip that fits through the plate between the engine and trans. Is bigger across on the new starter. By somewhere around .060". I'm using a "regular sized" C4 bell housing not the II specific bell. The starter has a FoMoCo part # cast into the nose piece. Has anyone run into this before? If so how did you work around it? I've heard of some bad nose piece castings running around but I find that a little difficult to believe.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim

Take both starters back to the parts store and see what matches up.

It appears as if the eBay individual that sold me this starter sold me one for a M/T truck. The auto trans. are the same and the car M/T and autos are the same but the truck nose is shorter. I'm going to a local rebuilder and see if he can get me the correct nose casting.

I think that the late model stick trucks used a larger flywheel and clutch than the Mustangs requiring the shorter nose.

Well I think I have it. 20$ = new starter nose cone = A starter that works. Fit right in and fired right up. Can't bitch too much just wish I would have had the right starter for the start though.

Thanks for the help.

Tim.
