I just got a new (OLD) set of 1970 302 heads for my `89 block 5.0 . I want to know you guys opinions on if I need to drill the steam holes into the block so that they match the ones on the heads. I`m talking about the very small ones that are above each cylinder as seen on a Fel pro head gasket 1011-1. This is a street strip engine.------------------ http://maverickgrabber.iwarp.com

Mav,Check the water jackets in the heads. I think you can drill the heads to acess the water jackets in them. That's what I did when putting 351w heads on a 289. Not sure about your combo though, SteveW

SteveW is right. Use the late model gasket as a template for the holes. The engine will run cooler for it. What do you mean am I sure Steve... Is there something wrong with them? They have been milled to 55cc chambers,Have 1.94/1.60 small stem valves,studs/plates, smoothed intake runners ,professionaly ported "D" style exhaust ports(they look nice ) and new Comp springs locks and retainers. I figure they`ll make pretty good power. [This message has been edited by MAV (edited 03-14-2003).]

I was just thinking of the small valves and intake ports, but it looks like you have that covered.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com

He has the valve size covered but the ports are still too small for good power unless the motor is around 221 Cubes. Probably will work OK if the motor is not going much above 6000 RPM.I've spent hundreds of hours trying to get early small block heads to go fast. They only work on a couple of SS combinations (Alex and his friends) John

Well...The `65 289 heads I`m replacing were on a 12.8 :1 302 with a solid comp cams .576/.570 255/[email protected] 106ls and an old torqer intake with a holley 750dp. the car has a c-4 /4.88 gears and 29 inch slicks, and 3050 ibs with me in it... went 11.47. A buddy of mine had a fairmont with the same cam, pistons, and intake, but with `69` windsor heads and a 4.30 gear...went 11.60 on the motor and 10.92 on a 150 shot. I know these old heads are considered "Old school" by alot of people, but Im on a very tight budget and the numbers above dont seem all that bad to me ------------------ http://maverickgrabber.iwarp.com
