Are mandrel bent pipes really worth it? I mean does a little bottleneck really restrict flow that much? I have asked a couple mechanics and exhuast guys and they do not think it really makes that much of a difference at all, especially if your pipes are bent by someone competent. I know alot of you guys run open headers on your race cars and could care less about exhaust, but for my (soon to be) healthy 351W I really dont think mandrel bending will really make that much of a flow diffrence. Maybe over the rear axel, but i dont know. Any opinions?------------------ 1970 Grande H code 351W FMX

Has Howie's career gone down the tubes so much that he is now doing mufflers and tail pipes? ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." Well, the people you have asked are the ones using pressure benders to make exhaust systems. For performance (especially a hot 351W based engine) mandrel bending is very important. If you can't afford anything else, at least get a set of the $99 Flowmaster mandrel bent tailpipes. (if you run tailpipes) The tighter the bend, the more it gets crushed... and tailpipes get bent very sharply. Your local muffler shop should have no problems installing them for you. The 'crushed' area in the pipe that is a result of the pipe-benders in most muffler shops will most definately affect performance. Your exhaust does not flow out the tailpipes in one continuous flow. It actually comes out in 'pulses' or 'wavelengths' that all react with one another to help, or hinder the flow. Unnecessary crimped areas will create a disruption of the natural backpressure that forms in the exhaust and cause the exhaust pulses to actually 'fight' each other, restricting flow.
