I just got a reply fom Comp Cams. They said DO NOT use the Crane steel gear. It's not compatible with their cam gear material. RAY------------------ RAY, THE WISE A@@ PHILLY GUY!! Comp lists their hydraulic roller cams and certain street solid roller profiles as being compatible with OEM cast iron cam gears. I called Comp to discuss this and the tech I spoke with (Dennis) said their -8 part number hydraulic and street roller cam cores are austempered ductile iron. A surface treatment hardens the cam lobes so they can run a roller lifter. He also said either a cast iron or cast steel distributor gear is compatible with the -8 cores to run with the cam. Not compatible are machined steel gears like the Crane 351C part which is made of 8620 steel, the same as a solid roller gear. He said the OEM and Ford Motorsport steel gears are a cast steel and would work fine but Ford doesn't make one for a 351C. Solid roller cams are usually ground on 8620 billet cores and require bronze distributor gears. It may be possible to use a machined steel gear like the Crane (though Mike Trusty had trouble with his) but not an OEM cast steel gear. Dan Jones

Dan,I just got off the phone with comp tech and they told me that the cam I have requires a bronze gear. The part number is 34-710-8 and he said it was a billet core not austempered ductile iron. Hummmmm, has me wondering if maybe some are iron and some are billet even though they are -8's. ------------------ Larry No fast Fords at this time but one fine cruising 96 F350 CC DRW Power Strokin diesel. I had to call Comp three times before I got a consistent story. The first two guys didn't have a clue but the third guy seemed to know what he was talking about. Dan Jones
