Are they on all V8 explorers of a certain year range? What other vehicles might they be on, and that years? Is there a code on the car or motor to give it away?

Exploders have GT-40 "P" heads.
Only Cobra's and Lightnings have GT-40 heads.
Simplest way to identify either is the intake valve size is 1.85 on all of them.

What is the difference between the GT-40 'P' heads and the regular GT-40 heads?

I think the plug angle is a bit different. Making it nessesary to use special headers. SOmeone correct me if I'm wrong.

the gt40-p heads have 4 slash marks (lines) on the end of the head. they also have gt40-p stamped by the 1st plug hole. they do require special headers because of the plug placement. the flow very similar to the gt40 heads. here is a great article on them.

The GT40 head was used in the 96 and early 97 Exploders. I have a pair of them that came off an Exploder.

The main difference is the plug placement. -P heads will not accept regular headers.
