It allows the engine to rev ever so slightly against the transmission so it can get in a higher RPM range on take off or launch.(very simplified explanation) ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." A torque converter also multiplies torque, and if it stalls at the max torque rpm of your engine it multiplies MAX torque. So the proper converter will increase wheelspin. SteveW

how much would a 2500rpm stall converter cost? and would that do very much on a street car? or is it pointless to put them on street cars?------------------ Alan 1966 Tahoe Turquoise A-Code Coupe 650cfm Holley 4bbl / petronix ignition / missing valance / white vynol top

It all depends on what you have planned for the car. On my 302 street Fairmont, I was racing the car regularly in the Sportsman ET bracket class (13.00&slower)at our local strip. The low compression 302 had a Performer intake & 600 Holley, headers & 3.55 gears. I put in a fairly small (204, [email protected] duration), but it was enough to kill the 60 foots by a tenth, with the stock convertor. I put in a B&M "Holeshot" convertor, & it made a pretty nice gain on the track, however, even this very tame convertor caused freeway RPM to climb by about 150-200 rpm while going 60 mph. Also, under normal, light throttle daily driving, the car will feel a bit mushy off idle, & the shifts won`t be as crisp. The looser the convertor, the more pronounced these side effects are. One nice feature with a higher stall convertor is that if you have an engine that tends to idle higher than stock, the looser convertor will reduce the shock load when you put the car into gear. In other words, it won`t bang into gear harshly. It also will not have the engine pulling against the brakes so hard at idle. But when you do step on the gas hard, the engine will climb into its powerband much quicker.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed 59 Meteor (Canadian Ford) 2 dr sedan 332, auto 74 F350 ramp truck 390 4spd

11 inch 2500 RPM converters are very cheap. You can usually get one for about $200 or less from a local converter house.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked."
