I want to do a mild rebuild on my '67 289. I know heads can give some great gains. I can't handle the $1000+ for aluminum heads. Have been looking at GT-40P, but finding headers sounds like a hassle.
Came across an old Hot-Rod mag and they suggest the C90E or D0OE or D1OE. I found the valves were approx the same size as the GT-40P and the ports are larger than stock 289. I figure they probably have the thermactor bump in the exhaust that will need removing.
SOOOO, question is are they worth tracking down a set? How much should they be milled to maintain 9-9.5 to 1 compression? OR are the GT-40P heads for $550 and a set of $250-$300 set of headers the way to go? Thanks in advance. Charlie

Charlie,

I'd suggest a pair of World Products windsor jrs. Best bang for the buck and your headers will work too. Even Sam has them.

On my 302 Fairmont streeter, I replaced the original 69cc stock heads, with a set of rebuilt, but stock 69 351W heads about 6 years ago. In my case, the Windsor heads actually increased my compression by almost 1 full point, due to the chambers being about 10 cc`s smaller. The car picked up 6 tenths in the 1/4 mile with the 351W heads, although I think it was more due to the extra compression than the slightly bigger valves & ports, but I can`t prove that, one way or the other.
