I was thinking about changing cams in my semi-mild 306... I have a Lunati [email protected], .488 lift, 110 LSA... It has a lopey idle and has good power with the 5 speed from just off idle to about 5500 RPMs... I have Speed Pro pistons with bigger than stock valve reliefs... I was looking at the XE-274 or larger... I'm thinking if I keep the lift under .550, I shouldn't have any problems with piston/valve clearance... Can anybody tell me anything I need to watch for with this cam, or is it a good cam at all?------------------ Mustang Lover... Blue Oval Bleeder... I've got the scars to prove it... Does anyone have anything to say on this post? Or am I just fartin' in the wind? quote: Originally posted by itlbrnmoff: I was thinking about changing cams in my semi-mild 306... You didn't give many details on the engine, but if its fairly mild the XE-274 is probably too big.Stock heads probably won't make much power above 5500 anyway.Like I said more details on the entire combo will help with a few more responses I'm sure.

Nah...they think I'm a know-it-all... If I was, I wouldn't have any questions. PS, Thanks Mustangboy...just click on the members photo gallery to see the specs on my engine... I get alot more responses from Canada, maybe I should move to Canada... ------------------ Mustang Lover... Blue Oval Bleeder... I've got the scars to prove it... Society's whipping post... I ran a XE262H cam in the 302 in my Pace Car. The engine combo that I was running wasn't too much different from yours, except that my heads were pretty much bone stock. With your current heads there probably isn't much use for going with a huge cam, as the heads won't be able to keep up with it anyhow. The XE268H would probably be as big as I'd go with a mild combo. Stepping up to a set of aftermarket heads with greater flow would certainly allow you to go with a bigger cam, however. I almost went with the 268 in my combo, but was warned by a lot of people not to go overboard on the cam (which a LOT of people do). I went with the less agressive 262 and couldn't have been happier... lots of torque, nice idle, and pulled to 5800 rpm, easy. Bigger isn't always better! Yeah...those ports are still real small even if the heads have big valves...I'm probably already getting some reversion or something from the ports not being able to flow air and dumping alot of fuel in there with the 750 cfm carb...I will eventually step up to some higher flowing heads...maybe I should leave it alone and just throw on the RPM intake I just got and see if it reacts any different... I checked out your combo and with only 9:1 compression you'll want to stay with a fairly small cam.I'd try your rpm intake and a Holley double pumper carb 600-650cfm.Should work good with your 5 speed and 3.45 gears. I like this site for power combo's,it should be right up your alley. http://www.jason.fletcher.net/tech/tech.htm ------------------ 1968 mustang j-code sprint.13.69@101 306cu.in, stock ported heads, weiand exellerator,650 holley DP,hedman hedders, comp 292 Magnum cam,4-speed,8 inch 4.11 detroit locker

Thanks Mustangboy...I've seen the Jason Fletcher site...I think that's where info is on the GT40p heads...I don't navigate the web enough, I'm always stuck here it seems. I don't drive my Stang enough to justify sinking $1000.00 in cylinder heads just yet...It just sits in the garage and has turned into more of a statue or conversational piece? Whenever someone finds out I like to work on cars, they suddenly start approaching me with their FWD GM car nightmares...and...you know the rest....GM junk grease all in my hair, ruining my clothes, dampening my enthusiasm to work on my FORD.... ------------------ Mustang Lover...
