I've heard you can just change the wire and gas in a wire feed welder and weld aluminum. Is this true and if so what kind of gas does it require? ------------------ Jerry Smith 69 Mustang Pro ET Drag 70 Mustang retired former footbrake car "Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft.....Today, it's called golf." Jerry, you also should change the liner in the 'hose/cable' feeding the gun. Reduces contaminants from the steel wire. You should also change tips and nozzle for the same reason. The sheilding gas used to weld aluminum is pure Argon. ------------------ Larry No fast Fords at this time but one fine cruising 96 F350 CC DRW Power Strokin diesel. As Larry said, you need change the liner. We run plastic liners in the aluminum wire feeders.Check with the welder manufactor. Good luck Jerry. Roger------------------ 65 comet project 84 T-bird 302/C4 14sec street/strip Made in CANADA built for speed #1145

I think I'm going to try to find a local welding shop to weld it. It's only about a 10" weld and really that is too much stuff to buy just for a short little weld. I rarely need to weld aluminum anyway. THANKS GUYS Jerry

Tig welding is the best way.Mig can be done, and works fine, makes quite a bit of splatter which can be hard to remove if surface finish is important. It is frustrating as can be without a spool-fed gun. The aluminum wire really doesn't like to be pushed through ten feet of line.

I worked/watched a U.S. Navy being built using TIG. Many miles of al wire went through spool guns. Takes alot of practice even with the proper [expensive] equipment. You can forget using the under $1k welders for any decent al welding unless you have the time to invest much practice and even then you will be running against the tide.
