I need some input on torque converters. Almost time to order one. Specs: 557 BBF, (4.50 X 4.440) 6.8 rods, flat top forged pistons, 12.7:1 comp. Blue Thunder aluminum heads, BBC exhaust 380/265 cfm. 2 1/4 dragster headers. Cam is 275285 .050, .770/.770 (.745 net after lash) 110 lobe seperation, (I can supply the other cam card info if needed) installed 2advanced, Victor 460 intake, 1800 cfm Flying Toilet alky injection system. Trans is a 1.76 1st Powerglide, 4.10 rear gears, 33" slicks. All this in a 225" wheelbase dragster. Should be ~1875-1900 lbs w driver. It weighed 1850 with a 509 alum head BBC and a similar sized driver. Figuring extra weight here due to the 460 + filled block. I thinking about 5100-5300 stall with about a 6500 shift point. Seem right? Do I need an 8" or race 9". I have had some people tell me that this engine will make so much torque that it will "drive through" an 8" converter, no matter how tight it is. The 9" race (not a 9" street) converter can be tighted up to where I need it. Any ideas? Any converter companies particular that are better than the pack? I have had good luck with 8" converters in the past from PTC in Alabama and a few friends are running BTE from Memphis with good success. How about ATI? Any experience with them? They are having a winter sale right now with some good prices.

The car is to light to use a 9 inch in my oppinion Dave. I don't think that you would be able to flash as quick as you need to get the car accelerating. The stall sounds about right for your combination. I would contact JPT at [email protected] or 571-663-0578 ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." If I were in thge market to buy a new convertor, there are only two places I would even consider, JPT, and Coan. JPT because of the way Alex's stuff works using them, and Coan because I have never had any problems with the Coan convertor I already own (it's perfect). A buddy of mine with a 540 bbc has 2 convertors, an 8", and a 9" that stalls just a touch lower than his 8". He does not like the 9". It has a slower ET, but has more mph. No matter wehat he does, he cant get it to run as quick as his 8".

I concur with KV on the Coan product. I may not like the man personally, be he does make a great product. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." Dave, #1 You KNOW Kenny and his products at PTC. He is also in the neighborhood, just in case he didn't get it right ( highly unlikely ) YOU KNOW he will make it right. Also, his turn around time is great. I've seen Kenny Bring a converotr or send it by his brother to the track, on last minute's notice. I got mine from him and have never had a problem with it. Although my car is light, and makes good torque, my convertor would be WAY off for your ride. Kenny tightened up my 8 inch from 5800 stall to 4500 stall, he told me if that didn't pan out I would have to go to a 9 inch. I trust this guy alot, he has never lead me wrong. I don't know what size convertor you would need but if it were me I'd put whatever Kenny said it needed and go from there. Your convertor is going to be SUPER easy to take out anyway. Just my .02 cents
