Flex or "snap" bands are alive and well. They are still widely used by many transmission shops. I concur that the band is probably the primary source of your problem. I would drop the pan and have a look first though. You may get lucky enough to just adjust the band and change the fluid/filter.

I can't find it. The local Ammco Trans shop can't come up with one either. Do you have a contact?
