This isn't really a racing problem (other than its my tow truck)but I'm having problems with the clutch on my old 82 Ford pickup. It seems like its not totally disengaging,(hard to shift when not moving or grinds going into reverse). Also when I first start it up and move it a little,if I stop with it in gear i can feel it shudder a little and try to pull the truck ahead. The weird part is that I have to let the pedal out another 3-4 inches before it starts to engage and the truck starts to really take off.I can't really adjust the linkage any tighter or I'll have no freeplay at all.I changed tranny's recently(it was doing it with the old tranny too) and had the clutch out and it looked ok.It has a diaghram type pressure plate and a couple of the fingers weren't flat with the other ones until I tightened it up on the flywheel and then they all went perfectly even.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like the disc is sticking to the input shaft of the tranny. Did you grease the splines of the input shaft?

Yes I put a little grease on it Steve.I have a cousin with a 93 4x4 that is doing the exact same thing.Transmission shop told him it needed a new clutch but no explanation.

When the disc is stuck to the shaft it stays against the flywheel and won't fully disengage. It could be a bad pressure plate too.

I put a new pilot bearing in when I changed the trans.I was kind of suspicious of the pressure plate because of the way the "fingers"(don't know what you call them on a diaghram style clutch)didn't all stay in line with each other until I bolted it back up to the flywheel.I'm sure its not trans related because I swapped from a 3 in the tree to a 3 speed with overdrive on the floor and the problem is the same, slowly getting worse.
