When I rev the crap out of my 351W I cannot see the secondarys open, so I've finally decided to do something about it. Do you guys remove the little ball bearing an the diaphram housing? I did. I also put in a lighter spring. So how do I know how light a spring to use?

Removal of the check ball will require a stiffer spring like the black ro silver one.

Just out of curiousity, who has been riding on the hood to check and see if the secondaries open? They open from vacuum, and no matter how hard you rev it on a free rev, it isnt pulling against something and therefore isnt going to open the secondaries.

If you dont think they are opening, go to the track, make a pass with them set up normally, then come back, and unhook the arm from the rear throttle plate that comes out of the canister and make another pass. I'll bet it slows down a bunch proving your secodnaries were opening after all.

Didn't you ever see "Red Green"? We do things different here in Canada! So that's why I couldn't see the secondarys open! I took the ball out, and put in a pink spring and now I can see the secondarys open but the car backfires a bit when revved; I havn't tried it on the road yet. So where should I go from here? Put the original spring back in without the ball and see how it is?

OK, in case anybody is following this- I replaced the original(no colour) spring with no ball. Also I leaned out the idle mixture. There is definitely more bottom-end now; the car has been really dosile in the bottom-end. My new timing tape is not in yet so I still don't know how much total timing its at, I'm still at only 12 initial.

Dave,

Put the ball back in and run the lightest yellow spring. If that doesn't open fully, then remove the ball and run the stiffest spring. Good luck,

SteveW

Interestingly enough, the guy I bought the car from is an identical stand-in for Red Green! He even sounded like him!

In the spring package it says to keep replacing the springs with lighter ones until it bogs and them go back with a stiffer one till bog disappears. On my car I couldn't make it bog even with lightest spring and the ball removed.(carb is a 3310 750 VS)I finally switched to a 650 DP and everything worked great. The next summer I got a new larger exhaust and mufflers installed and I decided to throw the old 750 back on . The secondaries absolutely slam open now.I guess my exhaust was really restricting the airflow?

Just goes to show that you really need zero restrictions in your balls.

I'm using the stock spring-no colour- and no ball, it seems to work OK, I will get a spring kit for next year and do some better tuning. Also I am going to go with a double pumper without a powervalve for the track, I don't quite know what size yet.

One other trick is plug the vacuum bleed for the secondary's, lead from bird-shot from a shotgun shell works well and remove the ball.
