I have a 68 mustang with a 351W. Motor came in car, thinking about rebuilding it this winter, don't have much faith in prior owner, want to go ahead and rebuild it this winter so i don't have to worry about it cutting loose on me next year. Car is bracket only car would like to run 7.90's-8.0's. Have a few requirements, stock heads, and keep compression @10:1.

What year are the heads? If they are early heads, just port them. Bigger valves would help. Run a Performer RPM or Air gap intake. Run a hydralic cam, like one of the bigger Comp Extreme cams. Get a 750DP. A C-4 with about 4000 actual stall. A set of 5.14 gears and about a 28 inch slicks or ET Steets. Lighten the car as much as possible and run about 7.70. This is about the same combo as my dad's. He has run in the 7.70's some, 7.80's most of the time. Only turns about 6200 thru the lights. This is in a 69 Mach 1. Hope this helps.

I would not even bother with the stock heads. A set of Edelbrock Victor Jr heads or even the World Products Roush 200 (if you clean them up) will allow better performance than any set of factory windsor castings (ported or not).

1) A gear 2) Good valve job and mill the heads 3) A nice cam 4( Headers a must 5) Decent carb and intake 6) Mild converter That should get you square in the 8.00 range as long as the car is not weighed down with a super stereo or low rider hydraulic system. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator/ non 65-66 Mustang owner sensitivity co-ordinator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Part time secret agent license #0089 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl

Hey Alex, what gear would you suggest, what cam, how much convertor, how tall a tire, and do I need to put bigger valves in the heads?

4.10 gear at the very least. Tire would be dependant on the final gear selection. Valves would depend on the condition of the ones you have now. If they have to be replaced then I would install larger ones. About a 3k converter would be perfect. I don't do cams on this forum anymore. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator/ non 65-66 Mustang owner sensitivity co-ordinator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Part time secret agent license #0089 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl

I second the opinion on the larger valves. Windsor Ford heads get a nice bump in airflow from larger valves. They do not flow well at valve lifts above about .550 so a lot of lift isn't the cam you want. Alex may not recommend a cam on the forum but he will sell you a great one. He just got tired of all the second guessers on the cam specs. Email him.
