A couple of months ago I put a new Mallory 6AL digital ignition on my coupe. It has an individual tach feed wire and everything worked fine. Tonight I drive the car to our weekly cruise in and the tach needle goes crazy on acceleration, if you level off at any rpm it works fine and steady. Give it any gas, even just alittle and the needle starts bouncing down to zero and back up. Almost like it is working backwards. Any suggestions, or time to replace the tach? I haven't had a chance to check the ground wires yet.

Mike,

Check the wire connections before you throw the tach out.

Mike, do you mean MSD 6AL? The MSD Website:

http://www.msdignition.com/

has some info on adapters needed to filter out odd electrical signals for tachs.

Tracy,
Nope, it a Mallory VI AL digital with rev limiter. Its relatively now on the market.

I talked to their tech, they said it should not need a filter if it worked prior. They did say that their dedicated tach pickup could have a problem and instructed me on another pickup point. Gotta finish a cam swap before I can find out if it will work. At the rate I'm going I'll be breaking in a new cam on the way to Charlotte.

Had exact same problem at the track. The vibrations loosened the wire lead to the tach pickup. If the light on the tach still works but the needle bounces it is the tach pickup. If the light flickers it is more likely ground wire.
