I bought an MSD distributor and inside the box there was an Addendum on gear installation. Apparently they put a cast gear on the distributor and some applications require a steel gear. How can I tell what kind of gear I need? I do not know the history of motor and I am assuming it is the stock cam and distributor. My motor is a 351C-4V and I believe it has hydralic lifters. Any help would be appreciated.

Cast iron gear is acceptable for most all hydraulic (non-roller) cams and solid lifter cams.

Hydraulic rollers use a steel gear in most all cases.

Solid lifter roller cams can use either steel gear or bronze, use cam makers reccommendations.
