I see they make a fan clutch that locks up at low RPM and disenges to 60% at higher RPM. Since I only have a stamped steel fan now, would one of those plus a stock-style flex fan be a good choice or a waste of money? I was thinking of removing the fan at the strip but maybe with this setup I won't have to. My application must look close to stock. Thanks,
Dave

The clutch fan is a good deal. It'll save you a few h.p. and look fairly stock.

I saw the Flex-a-lite fans and clutches in the last Summit catalog. They have a huge selection of fans and clutches. Flex-a-lite also has a web site.

I have an old HOT ROD article where they compare fans on an engine on a dyno.It just so happens all the non stock fans they tested were flex-a lite.To make a long story short the clutch fans outperformed all the stock type fixed blade fans and the thermostatically controlled clutch fan part #5237 outperformed the type that freewheels at a set rpm. This one just freewheels below 180 degrees so it didn't cost any power as long as the temp doesn't go above 180.The other type clutch fan that you are talking about cost about 4 hp up to the point of where it disengages. As long as your engine is below 180 before you blast down the strip this fan costs you no hp.
