I have a C6 behind my 351W and everyone keeps telling me to put a C4 in it that it will run faster. I was just curious as to just how much ET I would pick up in the 1/8 th and 1/4 mile with the C4.

I went the other way. Ran a C-4 and swapped to a C-6 in my 69. Cost me .12 sec in the 1/8. Not too bad. Figure about 1/2 of that was due to the weight. I weighed botht he C-4 and C-6 on the bathroom scales. Both were dry and no converter. The C-6 was 147 lbs. The C-4 was 105. 42 lbs difference.

The C-4 was a stock unit with a shift kit. The C-6 was stock with a full manual reverse valve body.
Used the same converter with both (had it re-splined for the C-6)

All that's behind me now anyway. Last year went to a Powerglide (known as the powerslide around these boards). Regardless of what it's called it goes rounds and wins money. Best move I've made on the car in a long time.

Later,

David Cole

Absolute fact it a minimum of two tenths. This is based on all things being equal. If Dave's converter was a bit off on his C-4 that might attribute his minimal decrease of only .12 (which is still a bunch).
We have back to backed them on dozens (literally) of cars over the years and seen from two tenths to a full second pick up by switching from a C-6 to a well prepped C-4 and appropriate converter.
Our current rolling test bed, the 89 GT P/SA convert picked up two tenths going from a JPT AOD with 2.75 low gear to a JPT C-4.

When I switched from my c6 with a generic off the shelf TCI convertor that was stalling aorund 4600 to the c4 with a custom built 5600 stall Coan convertor, I picked up 3 tenths in the 1/8 and right around half a second in the qrtr with the same motor.
