HI: My first post ... I have a 31 spline traction loc with 3:50's and a late 60s short (42") tapered down housing off a Mustang, Cougar, Fairlane ?? Because of its end taper ala. 8" it takes the small bearings. Can a person get a 31 sline 5 on 4 1/2 axle that uses the small bearings? Do I have to go custom or can I salvage one?

Let me be the first to welcome you to Mustangsandmore. You will like it here. Lot's of knowledge. You will learn a lot.

Yes, you can get bearings for a 31 spline axle with a small bearing housing end. It's not a problem. You can call any of the axle mfg's if you can't find them locally. Moser has them for $30 each. Moser's site:
http://www.moserengineering.com/moser_interior/products.asp?CatID=1

They also have stock reman axles from time to to time. If you need one you can check to see if they have they correct length.
National Drivetrain also carries stock 31 spline axles.

You say your housing is 42"? If so, that means it has been narrowed and is not even close to the 65-66 housing. They use a 52" housing. 67-70 is 54" and 71-73 is 56".

Later,

David Cole

I just got my axels in last night - same kind of scenario you are running.

I put a 31 spline 3.50 traction lock center section from a 76 F-250 into my 69 Cougar with some axels from a 70 Torino that I had shortened about 1" or so. Can't tell you what the bearing numbers are now that they are pressed on but they were no problem to get. The seals were a bit more of a problem since it was hard to find a place that had them in stock, therefore if it helps, the seals that should fit your housing with the 1.5" diameter seal surface for the 31 spline will be a CR 14968 or National 9363S (same seals just different manufacturers). You should be able to go to Ford and get the part #'s for a 69-70 Mustang/Cougar/Torino, etc with a 31 spline rear end - they should be able to get the bearings and seals if they haven't obsoleted them like they have for the pionion shaft pilot bearing I found out. Dang I should have wrote the part # down of the one I found for future reference!
