This is out Dealership Sponsored Race Car. It is owned my one of my Parts Countermen, Don Curry. For the second time in the last year he broke the dist. gear pin on Saturday. Anyone have any idea why? Doesn't seem to be any other problem. Ray,Distributor drive gear pins break when there is excessive load from the oil pump. I'd change the oil pump and pick-up along with the dist's pin. Good thing the pin sheared, otherwise it would have turned the dist's driveshaft into a drill bit. SteveW

Steve, thanx for the reply. I don't beleive this is the problem though. First off it's a 514cu 460. It has a hardened oil pump drive shaft. This is the second time it's happened on two different motors. It has happened after shuting the car off. The motor is 13-1 and both times it happened when you shut it off and the motor seem to preignite for a split second. I wondered if the engine turned backwards for a split second and this is what's breaking it. If so, would shuting it off in gear help?? ------------------ THE CAPRI IS FOR SALE IN THE CLASSIFIED SECTION RAY . 70 MACH 1 351C NOW 408 STROKER 4SPD. 86 MERCURY CAPRI 5.0 RUNS 12.86 @107 1.65 60 ft. 2001 LINCOLN LS V8 1997 MUSTANG http://www.geocities.com/slariviere/7DMach1.html

That is weird Ray, but this could have been the result of it going out of time when the gear pin let go. Good thing it was just idling at the time. SteveW Next......

385 series engines are notorious for shearing the drive pin, especially when running heavy oil and a HV/HP pump. One of mine didn't and knocked four teeth off the distributor gear! That was alot of fun, but anyway....Something I've seen done is to use a solid tool steel pin with Loctite, or to use a second roll pin 90 from the first, and shifted @ .200 up or down on the shaft. If anything, drop the pan, and pull the pump for inspection. It's most likely caused by some foreign material getting into the pump. Give the pan a thourough cleaning, and run your oil through a strainer to see if anything is present.

You can also step the hole up a bit so that you have a clean hole; install new pin then drive a smaller roll pin thru the big one. This worked for me when running a wet sump. It will be tough on bronze gears if you are having to run them (wears quick ). Later, Mark J.
