If I wanted to get 31 spline axles for my Granada 9" rear, what is intercangeable? Is the Granada a large, medium, or small bearing? Anything else special about these rears? What is the differance between stock 28 and 31 spline axles other then the spline count? I heard that the 28's are cast and the 31 are turned? My Granada 28 spline axles have lathe marks (three holes). I know very little about Ford rear ends as you can tell.

The 31 spline rears were used for high performance cars and pick ups. Your Granada would be the little guy. In addition to more splines, the 31 spline axles are larger diameter. You would need to change the ends of your housing to use 31 spline axles.------------------

Your chances of finding any 31 spline axles in another car are next to none. Your best bet is with a set of aftermarket axles. You can get a pair from Moser, MW, Strange, etc for about $300 or you can get a pair of stock reman replacement 31 spline axles from Moser for about $145: http://www.moserengineering.com/moser_interior/remanufactured.htmMoser also carries the proper bearings to put a 31 spline axle in a small bearing housing end. They are the stock diameter outside, but the inside diameter is for the 31 spline axles. The bearings are $30 each http://www.moserengineering.com/moser_interior/products.asp?CatID=1 Later, David Cole [This message has been edited by Dave_C (edited 01-18-2002).]

The axles I have are huge at the ends then taper down. I assume that the 31 spline axles don't taper then? I was most concerned with what size bearings to get. Thanks for the info and links

After looking at the moser site I am more confused the Granada ends look like ford big bearing ends! Not at all like the small ends? Guess I will have to measure it and see. Thanks again

The actual shape of the housing end can vary. What's important is the bore for the bearing (one of 2 sizes) and the bolt pattern for the 4 mounting bolts. there are three bolt patterns. Small Ford, Big Ford, and New Style Big Ford (also known as "Torino".Just measure and use the template on their site for a guide. Later, David Cole

Ok, the verdict is out!My Granada 9" has ford big bearings and big bearing ends. Now other sites that I have read said otherwise that it was a "medium bearing" and was unique whatever that means? Center to center top & bottom bolt spacing: 3.5" Center to center verticle bolt spacing: 2.375" Inner bearing diameter: 1.531" Outer bearing diameter: 3.150" So that is a good thing to have the big bearing right?

It's good that you know what size housing ends you have. The rear end that's in my car came from a truck. It also had Big Ford housing ends with 28 spline axles. It had the Big Ford bolt pattern, but the housing ends were shaped like the "New Style Big Ford". Go figure. Just make sure that when you upgrade to 31 spline axles that you get the correct bearings. They will be 3.150 outside, but will have the 31 spline ID. Not sure exactly what that is, but Moser will know. The big bearings would be stronger than the small bearing, but I've never seen any problems with the small bearings in a street car. I guess the main advantage would be that most aftermarket disk brake setups are based on the big bearing. Later, David Cole
