Ford lists the King Cobra clutch for '86-9? 5.0's and 4.6's... 10.5" disc. I've got a NOS 289('65) 10.5" flywheel... why wouldn't it work?

V8,I tried to use a late model 10.5" clutch on the '66's original v-8 flywheel and the holes didn't line up. The '66 used a 10" clutch though. Also tried it on a 11" flywheel and again it didn't fit. I still have the 10.5" clutch cause it didn't work. For what it's worth. SteveW

The King Cobra clutch is a diaghram unit, with uses dowel pins & a different pressure plate bolt pattern than the "Long" style used in the early cars. Also, the later 302`s (80 or 81 & newer) use a 50 oz imbalance on the flywheel, compared to the 28 oz. of the older cars. The 79-85 Fox cars used a 10" diaghram clutch, the 10 1/2" came out in 86. I have a 10 1/2" unit in my 302 T5 Fairmont, I had to get the 88 flywheel I bought rebalanced to the early spec, as my short block is a 78. It has been working great for several years now, but my car uses the stock 88 5.0 bellhousing & a cable clutch setup, I don`t know how the later clutch would work with the early mechanical linkage.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed
