It's a tight fit with the 460 block in my 69. I want to set the valve lash on my flat tappet solid cam but set it with a cold setting. I know the best way is with the rocker cover off with engine running but don't have those clip-on oil deflectors to keep the oil from running all over the place. I wanted to pull the plugs with engine cold, rotate by hand and set the lash. My question is how much to compensate (extra clearence)with engine cold so the lash is correct when engine is hot. My cam card only gives hot settings. 2-3 thousands?? Thanks

You can always set them .003 tighter cold, then warm up the engine to its "hot" temp. then shut off the engine and measure the lash with it hot. If it is off, re-adjust with the engine hot, but not running.

That sounds backwards to me, I would want them looser cold allowing for expansion when hot. When the engine is hot there is no way to remove the plugs so I can rotate the engine by hand. It is such a tight fit between the tower and the head and not interested in burning myself. I just wanted to know where to set the lash cold if the hot setting is 23 thousands. My thoughts were @ 25 thousands with the possibilty of 26

There always seems to be debate about setting tighter or looser cold. I've even had cam mfg's say it's unpredictable and can vary depending on aluminum heads vs cast, etc.. I've always set them a few thousandths loose cold. That way if there are any valve-to-piston clearance problems at least you have a little buffer in there in case things DO tighten up. Then as soon as the car warms up, reset them hot. Then you're good to go.------------------

I would set it .002" loose, then run it and check it hot. Bump the engine over with the solenoid or key to check. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 M code 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 open '72 Mustang Sprint Coupe 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Lok '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip '97 Probe GTS 2.5L DOHC My Photo Page Christmas shopping?
