I have a question for all of you. I am trying to build a 377 Cleveland with a 6-71 blower on the top. I know maybe a little overkill. I have the offset ground crank and a set of H beam 6" Chevy rods. I also have a set of awesome closed chamber 4V heads. I would really like to use these heads. Can I get a custom piston with a big enough dish to get me down to around 8-8.5:1 compression? Another idea someone told me was to use a 1.250 compression height dished Chevy piston. Manley makes one that has a 14.5cc dish. The problem with this is it would be 0.1" down in the bore. This would help to lower the compression with the closed chamber heads. Would this be a reasonable thing to do or would I run in to other problems with the piston that far down in the bore? I think with a 14.5cc dish and 0.1 in the hole with a 64cc head works out to about 8.2:1. Correct me if I'm wrong. The other question I have is it necessary to have 114 deg lobe separation on the cam for 8 pounds of boost? Or would a standard cam grind work? Thanks for the help.Patrick

You can get "custom" pistons in any dish configuration from Ross, Venolia, Airas, or J&E. The chebbie piston is a lower cost alternative. You do need a wide center camshaft to disspell some of the cylinder pressure that the blower will create. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00 & '01 Fleet of FoMoCo products Moneymaker Bio US Class Nationals link

Alex, So in your professional opinion do you think it would be bad to run a piston 0.1" in the hole? Would a 14.5cc dished pistong 0.1" in the hole be enough to get me down to 8:1 with closed chamber heads? I kind of figured I'd have to get a different roller cam to match the blower.

With a quench head having the piston down a bit will give you a very thin area of mix to try and light that's sorta out of the flame area, if you have a custom piston made it'll keep the mix in an easy to light and controll area and make tuning a bunch better. IMO.

a .100 in the hole is a bunch and I would not do it myself for what it's worth. Just think about where the ring lands are going to wind up. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00 & '01 Fleet of FoMoCo products Moneymaker Bio US Class Nationals link
