Has anybody out there tried running a top end timing retard? If so, does it really help MPH ? I'm wondering how much retard and at what RPM it should kick in. It's a naturally aspirated 460 stick shift that peaks around 6500 RPM.

I just tried it last time out....didn't help the car at all. But in all fairness, it was really hot and the car was a bit fat. I jetted down and pulled the retard chip out and the car stepped right back up, I ran out of time and didn't get a chance to try pulling the timing out again after the jet change. I'm going to Sacramento for a test and tune tomorrow night, if I get a chance to try it again I'll let you know what I find. ------------------ Butch 460 powered 1967 Comet Cyclone 10.271 @ 130.069 Butcher's Home Page "Friends don't let friends drive Chevys"

I know of a couple of guys I used to race with that used a top end timing retard and it really helpd them. But they both ran small blocks (chebies )that more than likely had a lot of timing in them to start with.

That's a good point Kid, I usually don't run more than 38 degrees in mine. I might try 40 or 42 and pull 4 out tomorrow if I get enough laps in.------------------ Butch 460 powered 1967 Comet Cyclone 10.271 @ 130.069 Butcher's Home Page "Friends don't let friends drive Chevys"

I made a few passes tonight....none of them very impressive, but I did try pulling some timing out and it neither helped nor hurt, it ran the same mph within .03. I did learn that my 460 doesn't like 2 dominators ------------------ Butch 460 powered 1967 Comet Cyclone 10.271 @ 130.069 Butcher's Home Page "Friends don't let friends drive Chevys"

I have tested a 2-4-6 and 8 degree retard on MM on several occasions with absolutly no improvment. Actually we had a loss with the 8 degree chip. We have also over the last few years tested them on all other FoMoCo series engines with the same results. 289-351W's like 35 degrees and FE's, C heads and 385 series like 38 and better. That's it. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00 & '01 Fleet of FoMoCo products Moneymaker Bio US Class Nationals link
