I'm an electrician and we have pipe benders that will bend up to 4" pipe. Now I've been wondering if exhaust pipes could be bent on conduit benders. I don't see any reason why not, but I'm always hearing about "mandrel bent" and how much better it is.
The pipe we bend has to be smooth inside or we couldn't pull wire through it. If there was a kink in the pipe, the wire would hang up or get scraped. It would also look like crap and not be acceptable.
So...why can't I bend my own exhaust? 3" aluminum exhaust pipe would be

I am also an electrician and have wondered this also.I think exhaust tubing is thinner and would kink in the bender. Also you would have to get pipe the same dimensions as the shoe in the bender because conduit is measured differently then exhaust pipe meaning e.p. is measured by o.d.and conduit is measured i.d. I did work with a guy who used 2 1/2" conduit for his exhaust on a 57 Chevy It looked really good.He bent the part going over the axle in two pieces and welded it together then welded the rest.I would think E.M.T would be a bit heavy though. Yeah...looked at some aluminum emt, but then you run into the problem of installing it. If you welded it all together, it would be a pain(and expensive). And it would be a nightmare trying to find or make parts to connect it to headers or mufflers.
I was thinking that I could buy some straight exhaust tubing and custom bend it myself. I think if it was bent on a shoe that is "close" to the right diameter it would work. Like making matching bends by bending 2" pipe on a 4" shoe (example).
I've seen guys make "custom" exhaust out of grc, but imagine how heavy that would be. You'd have a couple hundred pounds worth of exhaust pipe.
