For some reason I was thinking that the new Ram clutch kit I purchase would come with new bolts for the pressure plate. It didnt! Can I just go to the hardware store and get some or do I need to get some specifically made for the application? Its a 302 with a ram steel 164T wheel and the clutch kit is the Ram 88502 kit (RAM-88502 at Summit). I think this was covered before but I cant find it!------------------ Ed S. 68 S-code FB GT 4spd(now C6)/3.25 PS PDB 68 J-code Cp Sprint"B" C4/3L00-9" PDB PS AC (now toploader with 3.70 Traction Loc & 2.5" rear drums) 99 F150 XLT Ext/cab, 4X4, 5.4L, 3L55

Don't use standard Bolts!!! Most mustang supply store can get you the ones you need. The correct ones are only threaded part way for shear strenth. Larry

Ed, Your parts store may have a set of Mr. Gasket bolts hanging on the wall.... maybe $9 total. It seems they should be Grade 8, 7/16 x 20 thread and only 0.680 in. long (from end to under head). Like these: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=MRG%2D6711&N=700+400330+302895+115&autoview=sku I'd also use a quality lock washer and blue loctite tightened down evenly. Regarding Larry's comment, I don't know if the length of threads is an issue or not.... Ryan

5/16 x 18 with an under head length of 0.780 in. Sounds like the correct ones to me. Larry

Yep, I messsed up again.
What I posted above are FLEXPLATE bolts (for an automatic trans). Sorry to muddy the search waters, Ed! Ryan

Ryan,Dont feel to bad because this is what I just got from RAM. These are 1.25 8mm bolts which can be purchased at a Ford dealer, you may also need the dowel pins which can also be purchased at a dealer. I think this is only true for the 5.0 HO engines. There are no holes in the fly wheel (RAM 1505) for dowels.

Just to be safe, take the flywheel to the hardware store just to determine what the thread size is. Then you can buy the appropiate kit, whether its Summit or Ford metric ones.

The special metric bolts are for 5.0's that have a diaphragm type clutch that is located on the flywheel with a dowell pin.The early stuff does not have a dowell pin to properly locate the plate onto the flywheel. Instead, the early cars use special SHOULDERED bolts whose shoulders (unthreaded part near the head) fit PRECISELY into the pressure plate hole. This locates the plate EXACTLY in the center of the flywheel. Without these, the flywheel can be off a tad, which can cause SERIOUS un-balance issues. Stock, these cars came with 5/16" pressure plate bolts. Some aftermarket flywheels and pressure plates are set up for 3/8" bolts. If everything is stock, the bolts should be 5/16" If you are dealing with aftermarket stuff, be safe and buy BOTH the 5/16" and 3/8". Of course, if the flywheel is already out, you can simply which bolt fits. Be SURE to check the special shouldered bolts in the pressure plate to make sure they fit nice and tight. (you don't want to install 5/16" bolts in a pp designed for 3/8" bolts even if the flywheel is still 5/16") Good Luck! ------------------ Mike Burch 66 mustang real street 302 4-speed 289 heads 10.63 @ 129.3 http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_mburch.html http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/healey/367 http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?220 [This message has been edited by n2oMike (edited 07-28-2006).]

I went to Napa and the only plate bolts the guy could find in the book was 7/16. I new the flywheel had multiple patterns for different size pressure plate/cutch combinations but I noticed some of the holes are larger. Most of the fit a 5/16 x 18 bolt but there is also a pattern for a larger bolt also. Im very surprised that RAM couldnt give me a correct answer on this considering that I gave them the part number for the flywheel and the clutch set which are both made by them. Im even more surprised that their Tech line is closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday.I'm going to see which holes the pressure plate lines up with and then see what the bolthole sizes are. After what Mike said, I hope RAM can tell me if the pressure plate is designed for 3/8 or 5/16. A knowledgeable person for Tech lines is essential but they also need to read all of the information about the vehicle.

Well all I can say is that my area sucks or maybe this is just what people call progress. With as built up as it is, nobody within 20 miles has the bolts I need. I used to be able to go to a speed shop or a regular auto parts store and pick up its like this but not anymore. The speed shops are pretty much gone and the chain parts stores have moved in. Even when I call or go to a dealer I can see it in the face or here it in there voices. First they will say thats a pretty old part and then they look it up and find that its still available. Then it would take a week to come in but you have to order 10 or 12 because thats the way its packaged and we dont want to be stuck with the rest. I guess I have to place an order with Summit, Jegs or NPD and get the 5/16" bolts.
