During the pursuit of parts for my radiator/water pump swap I ran into something that has me puzzled. Knowing that you all have "been there, done that" for most of the stuff I'm now doing I pose these questions to you.

Is the harmonic balancer functionally different between the 289 and 302 ?

What about the water pump?

and the crank and pump pulleys?

Could I put a 289 balancer and pulleys on my 302?

Thanks for your time.

The 302 balancer changed in 69 or 70 and later years to a 4 bolt crank pulley. All 289s are 3 bolt so only early 302 pulleys will interchange with the 289.Also when the 302s changed to the 4 bolt pulley they changed the water pump outlet to the driver side so the timing marks on the balancer were changed to the passenger side so you could see them. The 289 timing marks are on the drivers side as they had the water pump on the passenger side, again like the early 302.You can mix and match all of this stuff between the 289/302 just make sure you have all of the matching parts. The timing cover needs to have the correct pointer as well to match the balancer. Most 289s have the pointer cast into the cover and the 302s had a bolt on unit.
