I just picked up my car, and the guy that did the gear swap, told me to take it easy the first 500 miles. Is he full of it??? I've never seen it posted here to baby them after a swap, and since they charged me almost TWICE what they quoted me on price, I don't trust the guy 100% for his info. Help please. Thanks

Hey William,

According to all of the things I have read, they have a break-in period. I usually follow something similar to this:

I think the brake-in procedure is in the instructions that I sent you with the gears.
Did you go with a trac-loc too?
How do you like them?
I would change the gear oil after 500 miles or so, and then you can really get on it and let us know how you like them.

I didn't even notice what the installer gave me, but I did get some papers with the reciept, and they are some install instructions in the stack. I didn't even open the box, I just took them both to the shop when I found one. Yes, I found a Trac-Loc unit too, I waited on the gear install till I did.

Is a clunk sound normal when you go into gear with these units??? Never did it before, but now it has a pretty loud one, more so going into reverse than into drive. He also said some oil would go down into the axle's, so I guess I should check the level of it again, I've put about 75 miles on them already.

Remember, your speedometer is probably incorrect now. 75 miles may not be 75 miles.

My TL unit never made a clunk, I'd check your u-joints or bring it by his shop and have him check it.

What gear ratio did you go to and from?

OH YEAH! I can already see trouble ahead, that and some tires . I gotta check the oil level tonight, just to make sure it's not low, don't wanna go thru this again ever. In fact I won't, I'll go 9" already put together. Thanks for the time Men, I still gotta figure out the clunk.

Ron gave you some good advice up there , take it back to the guy who did it. Let them tell you what is wrong since it didnt do it before. You try and figure it out and they can blame you for something they did.

I hear ya loud and clear Boss. What I meant was, I just want to find out for sure where it's coming from. I've still got to check the oil level too, if it really does go down into the axle's, I have no idea how much. The guy kinda acted like 8" rear ends were easily broke, so I don't know if he's tring to hide something, or just comparing them to the beefed up 9" 4X4 rears he's used to. I ain't doing NOTHING to viod the good ole warrenty.

I'd go do some figure 8s in a parking lot. Sometimes the lube and Posi chemicals don't get worked up into the clutches until you do this.

If it was a u-joint it would have been clunking all along, but I would take the driveshaft loose and pull one of the caps off of your rear ujoint. Make sure they didnt screw up the needle bearings, and that you don't screw them up putting the cap back on.

Give it a couple more miles before you do any doughnuts.

I am. I drove it more this morning and it's not as loud. I checked the oil level too, and it was right below the lip. I think it'll be all right, I just get noid sometimes.

Try this and see what happens! Remember that your not trying to spin the wheels but get getting the clutches to turn and get that lube in there.
