Took my car to get the rear end done this morning (about 45 freeway miles), and when I got off the exit, I noticed the oil pressure dropped to around 30 while sitting there. I put the car in netural and raced the engine, and it climed back up, but only while under acceleration. As soon as I started to roll again, it went to normal. Any symptoms to look for that would cause this??? Something else too, my girlfriend said that a puff of black smoke would come out of the exhaust at regular intervals. I never drive this car long distances, this is only the second time I've put this many miles on it at 70+ mph. I will check the oil level to see if it's low, I didn't see any leaks on the top anywhere, but I do have a seal/oil pan leak for sure. Thanks for any time and info on this, it's greatly appreciated.

I was told......that as long as you're around 10 - 15 lbs AT IDLE, you're okay....you're probably running a 40 weight oil....it "thins out" after the engine get's warm and the pressure will drop....my '73 runs around 20-25 lbs (warm) at idle and 45-50 lbs at speed....this is a daily driver....

I'd say the car is fine. 10lbs of oil per 1000 RPM is about the minimum you ever want to see. If you are at idle at 30 lbs, you are operating normally.

WHEW!!! That's a relief!!! What would cause it to just start dropping, it always idled at 50 before this trip??? Strange. Anyway, thanks Men, you saved me another ulcer.

If you dont normally drive long trips then thats the difference. Even though your coolant may get up to temp that doesnt mean your engine is fully heat soaked. Long trips get the engine nice and toasty and will cause the oil to get nice and hot (which thins it out).

Oil pan leaks wont cause low oil pressure - just high blood pressure.

the little black puffs while driving isnt oil related but means your rich, probably too much gas from the accelerator pumps or something. A lot of cars will do that though.

Thanks Phil. I'm so happy I have you guys to set me straight on these things. I just put in a new distributor, so I'll do another A/F check as soon as I get it back tomorrow. Thanks everyone, you guys ROCK!

Are you low on oil by any chance?? If the oil pick up is starving it will result in pressure drops.

I don't think it would be much more than a qt. if it is Eric, I'm taking one with me when I go to get to be sure. My leak equals to about the size of a .50 piece if it sits 24 hrs straight, but how much it blew out of the leak is a different question. I'll crawl under it to see what it looks like, even taking some brake cleaner to see where it's wet when I get home. I'm going the back way home, so I don't have to pound on it with this oil again. I'm changing it tomorrow also, it's close to the miles, so I might as well get it out of the way too. Thanks for taking the time, and sorry about rambling on, I just over state myself sometimes.

Just do not do what my neighbor did last year.

When she got home from shopping she noticed that her red oil idiot light was on, so she decided to add oil to her car. Her husband was at work and he does all the maintenance on their vehicles, she figured she would help so she grabbed the oil from the garage and proceeded to add oil until it was full.

What she did not realize was that the car should be turned off and all the oil in the garage (9 liters) was for 2 oil changes in her car. She added all the oil turned the car off and went in.

Later that day she went out and proceeded to blow seals and gaskets and make an absolute mess of everything .

Results were one pi$$ed off husband, oil everywhere and a very upset wife, this was the last time she added oil to her car.

Thanks John. I gotta go with what Phil pointed out, I don't ever get this car up to full temp apparently, OR it's the first time I've noticed it, but I don't think that's the case this time.

I was in no way implying that you do not know how to check or add oil, just thought I would share this funny/sad story with you.

I also agree with Phil about the probable cause of your oil pressure drop.

One thing you can do if you want the pressure up a bit is to use Royal Purple synthetic, when I used it in my 65 Fastback 289 it did increase my oil pressure (not the reason I used it).

The one thing that I did not like about it was, with the increase in oil pressure the car developed a few leaks, no big deal but if you are anal about no fluid leaks in your car like I am it was a pi$$ off.

I can't get it locally, so I run the hi-milage Castrol synthetic 10w30. To be honest here, I don't even know how many miles the re-build has on it. I run synthetic because I thought it was the best now, but what do I know. I knew you were joking also John, and I think I would have been a little hot too if my GF ever did that.

My late grandfather did this once on his old 400 Impala. He filled it right to the top. What a mess!
