I have a set of valve covers that are alum. When you look inside of them the baffles (I think that is what they are called) are gone. The part that is missing is under the oil fill cap/pcv hole on each cover. Can I use them for a carb set up or do I have to have the baffles? I read somewhere that I want the baffles. Thanks. You want baffles. The engine tends to gulp down a significant amount of oil if none are present or sometimes it will cause a drip on the valve cover breathers.Does it have a place to mount the baffles, you can easily cut a piece of sheet metal and bolt it on if thats the only thing missing.. If your just using them to set up your carb they will be fine.At higher rpms when driving without baffles the oil can be sucked up by the PCV valve or leak out around the filler cap on some setups.------------------ 68 J-Code,Sprint,306 4 speed,4.11s 13.69@101............... 66 coupe 289 4 speed, 3.20 cruiser http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy2.html

I think I have a set that I never installed around here somewhere. Does your covers have the mounting bosses with the hole in the center of each?

I will double check tonight when I get home. The baffles are gone and if I remember correctly there are the holes that would receive the screw or stud for the baffles there and if I am right the screws were broke off and are still in there. Again I will double check when I get home. Richard.

I don't have baffles either, and I drive my car almost daily, so will that cause a problem down the road??? Not to hi-jack this thread Richard, but I'm concerned now that I see this. ------------------ William "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."

Smokey exhaust and oil fouled plugs are two things that come to mind right away. This is only a problem if you're running a PCV valve.

I have not checked it yet. I am still at work. Just wanted to add that I am planning on using the PCV valve set up. Is there an advantage to not using it? When I got my car the motor in it did not have a PCV valve set up. I have since added it. Which way is better.Richard. [This message has been edited by rmousir (edited 12-07-2005).]

I don't have either one, so I guess I'm OK. I don't hardly ever get over 3000rpm either, so maybe that helps . Thanks for the reply, and the space.------------------ William "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."

ok I checked them out. In the under side I have six holes that appear to have been tack welded to something in the past. I suspect that there was once baffles there. I think I can reuse maybe 4 holes from each cover. Should be enough to hold baffles on there if I can find some. However I called summit and they have a set of cheap chrome covers for a carb set up (assume they have baffles) for $24.99.The covers are aluminum, grey in color. I figured I would paint them black and put them on but I don't know now. Maybe I will go the new cover way. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks very much. Oh and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! Richard.

Someone probably removed the baffles like I have had to in the past to clear the rockers. If you have roller rockers there is often interference. If you rev your car up then yes it results in some oil finding it's was up any available hole, pcv and oil fill pipe. I bought some spacers and then installed new valve covers with baffles. That fixed everything. I did run without the baffles for many years.

Coop, if your cars not sucking up oil or leaking it out then don't worry about having no baffles.I have installed a piece of sheetmetal to help block the openings on a couple of sets of valve covers and it worked great......Also rmousir a lot of the cheap valve covers don't come with baffles so I would check that out before buying.------------------ 68 J-Code,Sprint,306 4 speed,4.11s 13.69@101............... 66 coupe 289 4 speed, 3.20 cruiser http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy2.html [This message has been edited by mustangboy (edited 12-08-2005).]

So should I use the covers without the baffles????Sorry to be so dumb about this. I am almost ready to take off the '95 covers, timing cover, oil pan, and put on the older v belt style. So i want to make sure I have most everything I need before I start. Thanks. Oh, MERRY CHRISTMAS! Richard.

I would go ahead and install them if you have some Richard, or have the stuff to fab some up, it's just insurance it won't lead to a problem. I will eventually, just too cold right now.------------------ William "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."
