Ok, guys, I need some helpI have a 67, stock 289, 4bbl A/C fastback. The car runs fine. It uses some oil, but, what the hell, its been 10 years since the engines been rebuilt. Theres no telling how many miles are on the rebuild ( the P.O. claims there has been only 3000 miles put on it in since the rebuild, and I tend to believe it, since its obvious the car was used sparingly over that time), or how good the rebuild was, because I didnt buy it until 2004. Heres the thing. Since I bought it I have noticed an oil drip on the garage floor; Not a lot, about 2 drops a nite. I found it hard to believe that judging by the work done on the car, that the engine wasnt done as well as the rest of the car, so I have to believe (though I have no proof) that the rear main seal was replaced during the rebuild. That being said, I have noticed that the more I use the car, the less it leaks, leading me to believe that the rear main seal is dry due to lack of use. For example, Sunday I took it to a local show and put about 75 miles on it, and today, after sitting in the garage since then, there is absolutely no evidence of a leak. The floor is bone dry and even the rear of the engine shows no fresh oil. Judging by the past, I can guarantee if I leave it sit for a couple of days, it will start to drip oil as before. O.K. I know there are products out there that claim to soften old seals and gaskets. It seems to me I should try one before I tear into the rear seal replacement thing. Do any of you have any idea which additive will do the best job of softening the seal? If Im going to try something, it might as well be the best! Any opinions? Thanks for your help. Jay67fast

Are you sure it's engine oil?I've seen automatic transmissions do that. When they sit for a few days some of the fluid drains out of torque convertor etc into the pan and may fill it past a point where it has a leak.As long as you drive it regularly it doesn't do this. ------------------ 68 J-Code,Sprint,306 4 speed,4.11s 13.69@101............... 66 coupe 289 4 speed, 3.20 cruiser http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy2.html

Mustangboy, Thanks for the reply. That's an interesting thought, but it's definitely oil. But I'll keep your idea in mind, just in case. (hope I don't need to remember it). Jay67fast

Sounds to me like it just wants to be driven.

If it only drips a couple drops after sitting for extended periods, I doubt it would be worth the bother and expense to attempt a repair. Murphy's Law would suggest that by trying to fix it you will end up doing more harm than good. Enjoy it, drive it more often, and don't worry about 2 drops of oil

Thanks to all of you for your responses. Mustang68, The entire engine is dry as a bone except in the rear of the engine below and around the rear main seal. I'm pretty sure that's it. The rest of you guys have taught me something--- I've been too tight a**ed about this,I think I should just chill out and enjoy the car. When (and if) the leak gets serious, then I'll worry about it.
