Just joined. Looking for a good header for my 66 coupe. Will use an AOD. I am confused between shorty and long Tube. I hear the long tubes are better. I have Hedman, Hooker (comps), sanderson and the FPA headers. Can someone also give me info on the tri-Y header vs. the 4 into 1 header. This is a mildly built 302, but I would like fo rit to perfoam at it's optimum performance cabalilities engine wise.

I am sure that my facts are only partly correct. The tri-y is more like what the shelbys used. I am not sure about the 4into1 header.

I suggest the long headers over the shorties. I am looking at the same thing right now and i also plan to use a AOD in the future. I have been looking at Headman but am not sure.

If you can get a hold of the summit racing parts catalog as well as the NPD and mustangs plus parts books. Then look them over. They have lots of little tid bits on what headers do what.

Hope this helps.

Richard.

The 4 into 1 is your standard long tube header.

Life is a compromise. Considerations are cost, ease of installation, driving issues, and performance.
Let's review your options
Standard cast iron manifolds - cheap, durable, stock, bad performance
Highpo cast iron manifold - cost a little more, durable, stock on some models, a little performance improvement
Tri-Y used on Shelby mustangs, decent performance,
Short tube - 4 into 1 collectors, good clearance for street driving, good low end torque
Long tube - also 4 into 1 collectors, can drag on the street, advantage at high rpm

I just picked a page, it's not an endorsement of that site.
Other considerations - X or H cross over, pipe size and mufflers. You're looking at an exhaust system - not just the headers.
I have JBA shorties on mine and am very happy.
