My research hasn't helped much so need your help... The engines out in my 67 and I'm looking to swap the box out the manual 19:1 box for a 16:1 unit. The original box tag is as follows: SMB A 6.T20B According to Dan Jones very helpful box decoder, it tells me this box is a short-shaft box, 19:1 Manual steering box. Here's why I've got all the head-scratchin going on..... Isn't the difference between short-shaft and long-shaft the existence of the rag-joint? That is, the long-shaft is a box has a non-removable shaft attached to it that the steering wheel is attched to. And is it true that the short shaft box has, literally, a very short shaft, coupled with a rag-joint to a separate shaft going up thru the firewall to the steering wheel? The reason I'm struggling with this is, I've got a tube (about 3" dia) from the steering wheel end that goes all the way down to the box. So if I have a short-shaft box, where is the rag joint? It can't be up inside the tube can it? Am I just not seeing the forest for the trees? Thanks in advance, Joe------------------

You need to remove your steering wheel and then pull the steering column up and expose the rag joint.------------------ Nick 65FB 408c AOD D.T. Mustangs are like Rabbits, except mustangs can reproduce a-sexually. Add your combo to the Tire and Wheel database View the Tire and Wheel Database

If you see your steering column tube coming out of the firewall and going all the way to the gear box then it means you have the full length one-piece shaft. Its been my experience that most 67's have the full length style, with the rag-joint style coming onboard in '68 along with the newly Federally mandated collapsable steering column. The rag joint is readily visible between the end of the steering column and the steering gear box. If you have the rag joint you won't need to disconnect the steering wheel or column in order to remove the gearbox.

I guess the 67s are a real tuff nut to crack being in a transition mode. The odd thing is that the box code tag calls it a short shaft type, according to the Steering Box List from Mustangs and Fords: https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/DanJonesSteeringBoxRatios.html This car is such a hodge-podge of stuff, it wouldn't surprise me if I had a long-shaft box with the wrong tag on it! quote: Originally posted by Scott H: The rag joint is readily visible between the end of the steering column and the steering gear box. And that's how a Torino I had was....pretty easy to get to and access.

Yep, it would look just like that Torino one did. And I would bet the box is mis-tagged if you read the numbers right.

This is what I've got... You can sorta make out the SMB A on the tag and the big tube coming down from the firewall. It makes sense that this is a long shaft from the way it looks, it's just a complete contradiction from the tag list, LOL [This message has been edited by joesgt281 (edited 12-06-2005).]

You are in luck! I recently had my box removed then replaced, then removed and replaced, and removed it again only to replace it. Easier to put in the swap headers with out it. I had no problem un bolting the 3 bolts then pulling it out from the bottom. Now, you might need to loosen that semi circle bracket that is holdiny the steering column up to the underside of the dash for play. You will of course have to have the steering wheel off as well. DO NOT lose the retaining nut from the steering wheel. For some reason can't find my nuts and none of my replacements are working well either.------------------ bakenaz.com Was 'A'Code 289 4v (Now a nice 351w) Fact Air, Front Discs

Randy, who runs www.Stangerssite.com has come to the rescue. And the following explains why we have such problems to begin with, LOL:Stanger's First Rule of Ford - No matter what you've heard, seen, read or experianced, there are always exceptions. The final word: http://www.stangerssite.com/steeringboxtagdecoder.html This is a GREAT list he's compiled of all the various steering boxes. Also, check the rest of his site for terrific info on all aspects of steering gear for Stangs. Dan Jones' list was extracted from a Mustangs and Fords article, but is wrong on my box code. The SMB-A is a long-shaft box, so my tag is probably original. Props to Dan for putting it out there, but we can't blame Dan for the magazines error. Thanks everybody for your help. This will definetly let me get back on the road sooner!! Joe ------------------
