Only the best for my friends

That is what a "FE" really does sound like
Love it my self.

McQueen drove the mustang in the chase
scenes with the charger. The charger was
a 426Hemi!The mustang was a 390GT. I worked
for a guy that was at the ford dealer where
the mustang from the movie ended up. He said
it was beat to death after McQueen got done
with it. It stil ran!!!! These are tough
little cars.

Can you even imagine a "CAMARO" up against
a Hemi Charger?

I actually heard somewhere the bullit car had all kinds of structural support added, among other things, while the charger was driven stock. No doubt still a pretty B-A car.

If you watch the side shots of the Mustang you can clearly see the braces on the bottom of the car(floors)Looks like angle iron ...

There must have been two Chargers as well,it starts out as an automatic and ends up a 4spd when it gets near the end..

Does any one know if the Charger was saved ????

Almost as good as watching it, is just listening to it...the revving, the sound of the exhaust, squealing tires, the sounds when they land after the jumps...pure movie magic. It's funny, the passenger in the Charger looks just like my grandfather.

The Mustang was a 390 but, the Charager was a 440 not a Hemi.

Is there any other movies where the star is a Mustang besides this one, and Gone in 60 Seconds???

This is what an 'FE' sounds like? Not really...excelpt for the few docile street scenes, all the sound effects for the Mustang were recorded from a vintage Ford GT-40 done at Sears Point Raceway.
Secondly, there is still some controversy over what the Mustangs had in them. Some say 289s others say 390s. There were two Mustangs used, a de-chromed and de-trimmed GT, and a plain fastback that matched (somewhat). You could spot the differences if you look closely, especially the exhaust, overhead console and the door mirrors.

McQueen actually drove very little of the chase scenes, less than half of the total footage. Stunt driver Cary Loftin bleached his hair and did the tough stuff. You can tell by loking at the wristwatches.

Of the two Mustangs used in the film, one was destroyed and sent to the bone-yard, and the other was sold to a secretary for 'Solar productions', who worked for McQueen. That car has subsequently changed hands privately over the years. It was never sent to a Ford, or any other kind of 'dealer'

There were two Chargers used, bought from local dealerships, and they both had 440 Magnums/auto trans. No 'Hemi' engined cars in the film.
Bud Eakins, another stunt driver was the guy who drove the Charger, and he also played the part of the driver in the close ups.

Originally, the bad guys were supposed to use a big Ford, like a Galaxie or something, but the unibody construction was not up to it. The full-frame construction of the Charger is what sold them on it.
The much lighter Mustang was not as 'challenged' due to its unibody construction, but it still did not fare too well during filming.

Another thing to add cobra's post is that one one of the Mustangs survied the movie and it is to believed be located in the Ohio vally region of Kentucky in a barn... The Owner does not wish for the public to know its wear abouts or their name. Steve Mcqueen tried to buy the car before he died but was turned away.

Dave Kultz (not sure of spelling) who owns the only Ford approved clone of the Bullitt Car has seen the vehicle and states it is very bad shape. Still has the extra bracing and the brackets for the cameras.

I've found the web site before but has been a while, a German named Wolfgang has great site and he works in conguction with Dave on keeping all Bullitt things and happenings up dated.

Also www.imboc.com is another website that has bunches of information, mostly on the 2001 Bullitts

that told me about the stang, said they had
a frame built under it. A GT40 has an "FE".
Unless it was one of the small block cars
they built for testing, back then. A 289
no sound even close.

68 Chargers were full frame cars.

I guess you got me on the 'FE' thing. GT-40s DID have 427s in them, but I am fairly sure the one used to record the soundtrack was a 289. Of course I am probably wrong about that!
At any rate, the 'FE' in a full-race GT-40 is certainly not too awful close to a typical Mustang 'FE' from back in the day.

Thanks Jimmy, just to add that link to the american/german little site
Look here

The original Mustang car is no more in Kentucky.
The Charger has not been found despite earlier statements from my side (my misunderstanding of Dave Kunz' comment.
The rest is on the website.

Great link!

68 Chargers were full frame cars.

You might want to check your sources on that one, Cobravenom. I have a '66 Charger. It's unibody construction, but 4200# worth!!!

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=105686

From the above article in the '68-'70 section:
But under that all-new skin was a very familiar car. The entire chassis and simple suspension system from the first Charger (and hence the Coronet) carried over intact along with the 117-inch wheelbase to the 1968 model. At 208 inches long overall, the '68 stretched another 4.4 inches longer than the already long '67 but most of the other dimensions were within fractions of an inch of before.

From the above article in the '66-'67 section:
Except for the two-door fastback roof and some unique trim, the Charger was every inch a Coronet. That meant it was a simple unibody structure with an unequal length control arm front suspension that used torsion bars as a springing medium and a solid rear axle on semielliptical leaf springs in the back. Except for those torsion bars (then Chrysler's trademark suspension design), there was absolutely nothing unconventional about the Charger's engineering.
