I have been trying to get my charging system working on my 66 for over a week now. The alternator is working, put in a new voltage regulator and check all connections.I`m about ready to pull my hair out. I have seen these 1 or 3 wire alternators with internal regulators. Could I install one of these and bypass my problem?Thanks,Tony------------------ http://ourworld.cs.com/blagintony/myhomepage/auto.html 86-302 HO bored .030 over crank .010 under, B-303 cam ,harland sharp roller rockers, performer rpm intake, 625 carter,AFR 165 heads.C-4 2500 stall ,granada disc brakes, 85 duraspark ignition, pony interior, the who,the doors, and ccr full blast on the stereo

Get the battery tested, before you replace anything. It might be that the battery might now hold much of a charge anymore... David F.

I agree, the battery may have been good before the alternator went bad, but may not be any good after the alternator went out. It is possible for a battery to have near 12v but be low on amps so take it in and have them test it.------------------ Under Construction 66 Coupe - - - 306, 10.2:1, 66 289 heads 1.84/1.50, mild port work, comp cams 270H cam, Performer manifold, Holley 700cfm double pumper, tri-y headers, 2.5 dual exaust w/flows, centerforce dual friction, 8" 2.79 gears, w/mini spool 1/8th mile - 8.6 @ 83mph 351w Stroker in the works

What's your car doing? Is the battery going dead? Is it a starting prob? I can help if you give some info.

My car is blowing voltage regulators in less than 5 seconds, I have put on 2 new ones and they charge for 5 seconds or less. I know the alternator is hooked up right. Have checked all the connections. I saw the other post on this forum after I posted mine. It seems like other people have had good luck with the 1 wire alternator so I bought one from Summit.------------------ http://ourworld.cs.com/blagintony/myhomepage/auto.html 86-302 HO bored .030 over crank .010 under, B-303 cam ,harland sharp roller rockers, performer rpm intake, 625 carter,AFR 165 heads.C-4 2500 stall ,granada disc brakes, 85 duraspark ignition, pony interior, the who,the doors, and ccr full blast on the stereo

What alternator did you end up going with ? If its a 1wire alt you dont need to worry about the wiring. If it is the old time, you might want to check out the wiring again. You might not have everything connected right and your are blowing the regulator, maybe something is shorting ? Good luck... David F.

The only way something would blow that fast is if you have incredibly bad luck or something is shorted to ground. I have actually had spark plug wires on in the wrong firing order even after checking it at least 5 times. I'd check the alternator wiring again, start from scratch and be meticulous, and from there see if you have any frayed wiring creating a short to ground.
