I'd like to get an internally regulated alternator for my '66 FB. I saw a conversion kit in the NPD catalog, but I need a new or rebuilt alternator anyway. Is there a model/year I could ask for at a parts store that would work, and how would I go about wiring it? -Andy

Andy there are many choices out there. I use and have been real happy with the power master 140amp unit.------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs HOOD HACKERS DELIGHT! My Pics

Do NOT use the one sold in NPD, its solid state and everything but it went out on me a little over 4 months after i got it. Its hard to replace (cant go to parts store to get a new one) and theres no way to tell thats its going out, it just wont charge one day. The places (mustang specific places) i went to, when i was looking at for a replace both told me they dont stock and they both had heard many bad things about them. I would suggest a new alternator. I ended up replacing my alternator with a 100amp Powermasters one wire alt. Well worth the money. Just my 2 cents.. David F.

When doing that conversion (to a Power master Unit) what else do we need ?Ie: New Bracket, any external electronic ? Is there a schematic to help with the new wiring ?

Thats the beauty, no new wiring. You just ahve to run one wire from the back of the terminal to the positive side of the solenoid switch. It has to be a failry heavy gauge since you are putting more current through it. You can pretty much get rid of the rest (from alt to regulator if you wanted to) or tape it to a side in case you want to go back to the earlier style again... David F.

I got mine from Summit.com. Mine was like $120 plus shipping (like 8 bucks). Like I said it puts out about 100 amps and is a 1 wire unit, and Powermasters has a great reputation, I had been looking at their alts/ starters for a couple years now. Then I finally had the need...David F.
