Hello all!
I found a mustang gt coupe(66) automatic for sale for 1,500, the guy says it has no rust, but has been vandalised(windows smashed) he said it was highly optioned and one of the more intresting options is bench seats instead of buckets.
its been ditched but only has little damage to the front left fender, he says the frame is slightly bent but he got it checked and the body guys said it would only take them an hour to get it straight and square.
I dont have the vin yet but he is going to get it for me tomorow.
Do you think a car fitting this description would be worth restoration in the end?

thanks for taking the time to read this

IMHO it depends on what you are going to do with it. If you are going to restore maybe. You would have to check the vin to see how rare it is. The more rare then the more yes. If the car is not rare at all and is just another coupe you may not want to restore it at all.

Now if you are going to restore/restomod it to the way you want it then I say for sure if you are committed to it.

Either way it is not very likely you will make a profit on it after cost and labor. If you are going to drive it go for it.

If it is a investment it needs to be pretty rare and in demand, like a Shelby.

Good luck
Richard

I'm a bit partial to early GT coupes myself so you're getting a biased opinion

BUY IT! $1500 is a steal for anything short of an absolute basket case. There is nothing in the VIN that designates it as a GT however, aside from the fact that it must have either an A or K code 289. Disc brakes, fog lights, dual exhaust, quicker ratio steering box, and trim package are the GT option group. Here's a cool link:

http://www.etconnect.com/gt/mmgtff.htm

It spells out how to spot a 'real' GT or a clone (there's lots of those). I've seen some advertised for sale as GTs that have nothing more than the fog lights!

Although not as rare as a Boss, Mach or Shelby, when you concider the relatively low production numbers of the GT cars they are quite collectable

My main concern would be how badly the frame is bent....Other than that a rust free shell is easily worth $1500 in my opinion. The fact that it is a V-8 GT car with lots of options make it all the more valuable. You could probably part it out and make money if everything is in good shape.I'd jump on it but then rustfree cars are worth alot more up here in Ontario where our salt covered roads in the winter have eaten up most of the original Canadian mustangs.

The disc brakes alone are worth a bundle!

I just got off the phone with the guy who is selling it and he tells me the vin in 6r07a174017, witch from my search meens it has the 289 4v, he said it does have disk brakes but they have seized from sitting so long.
It has dual exhaust and he said something about them "trumpeting" out the back or some thing like that.

I think im going to take a look at it next time im mobile.
so based on this info do you think its worth the 1,500 and towing cost?

thanks again, your help has proven priceless thus far

Since he only gave you the VIN, it's safe to say that the door data plate is missing. It would be nice to get the rest of that info.

As far as being worth it...from what I've seen, you could easily sink 20k into it and still not spend more than the car is worth. Real GTs are going for big bucks now a days.

Your call! If you got 1500$ and a place
to keep it, go for it. Negotiate always!
Price can adjust.

That VIN also tells you it was originally built in California.

I think the $1500 price seems to be in line with a 289 4barrel coupe. Being a GT, or at least having GT options, makes it all the more worthwhile.

Sorry, Just wanted to drop in on this again.

I think $1500 for this may be a little much or rather you should try to talk him down if possible.

I would ask a lot more questions and really check out the car. Does it run? How bad is the frame really? Maybe even take a body guy with you.

Be careful. It may be a GT and worth to restore/Mod etc but do you home work.

Richard.
