I have a friend that has a 302 and keeps spinning off oil pumps. I asked him about it and he says its just a flaw with that engine. Is this true and if it is whats the cure? If not what causes this?

While we are at it does the boss 302 have windsor or clevland heads on it?

Thanks, Mustangman

By spinning off oil pumps you must be referring to the driveshaft from the distributor to the pump??This does happen sometimes with high pressure oil pumps and high rpms..I'd hardly call it a design flaw with the engine though..The fix is to run a heavy duty shaft when upgrading to a high pressure/volume pump......The boss 302 heads are very similiar in design to the cleveland heads but have some differences in water passages and valve sizes depending on the years of the head.

99% of the time this is caused by little
pieces of nylon timing chain sprocket. they
get picked up by the pump and lock the pump
gears up. Then the driveshaft twists up or
the roll pin in the distributor shears off. The cure? Pull the oil pan off and clean it
out real good.

The plain old stock shaft will hold at
100psi just fine. I've tested it.
