Hey all.I am making some progress on the motor and I am ready to pick up some paint to make it pretty. I am going to be painting the engine the dark ford blue with spray cans (budget you know). My question is the motor is rusty dirty no oily dirty. Would it be ok to wire brush it to clean it up? Also I want the oil pan to be the same color should I put the pan on and then paint it or paint it seperately? My question is the motor is rusty dirty no oily dirty. > Would it be ok to wire brush it to clean it up?You have to get the rust off. You'll need to wire brush it off but even after that rust will be down in the pore of the metal. Get some disposable surgical gloves at Walgreens, a few 3M pads and some phosporic acid. Scrub it with the phosporic acid. The phosporic acid will eat the rust out. Hose it off with water then blow dry with compressed air then paint. If you go to the paint counter at Hamlet Auto Parts (I see you're in Amelia), they will have or can get you PPG DX-533 aluminum cleaner. It's basically phosporic acid in the concentration you want. > Also I want the oil pan to be the same color should I put the pan on and > then paint it or paint it seperately? Paint it together so you get the bolt heads (clean them up on the wire brush wheel first then clean with paint thinner). Dan Jones

I agree on both suggestions.

Maybe use high temperature primer before painting the final color. I used the high temperature primer and old Ford blue final color. It's held up very well for over three years now.------------------ reliving youth

Hey all,Got another question. I have a second pair of ford headers that do not have the efi bolt thing on them. I want to paint them and put them on the '95 motor. I have some good black paint for headers from the zone. How do I prep the headers? Also can I re-use the bolts and gasget from the '95 motor or do I have to buy new? Thanks. Richard.

I'm pretty sure the shorty headers that are on the 5.0 motors won't fit in a 60's engine compartment. You will need shorty headers designed specifically for your year or go with a traditional long tube head, such as Tri-Y's.

How do I tell what these are? I cleaned them up and saw the ford stamp on them. The look just the ones that are on the '95 motor now but with out the heat tube thing. I can put up a pic if someone can tell by looking at it.

I just went out and did a little look and measure. You are right again. Thanks for the tip. You have again saved me a bunch of headaches. I will have to sell them and see if I can find some other headers.Thanks. Richard.

Good luck selling them, as all the 5.0 mustangs from 87 and up came with headers from the factory. They weren't much better than manifolds and anyone interested in better performance on a later model mustang ditched them in favor of better quality, better flowing aftermarket headers. I sold hundreds of them. And the 'take off' factory headers usually went in the scrap pile 'cause nobody wanted them, even for free. 87-93 had no heat tube, 94/95 had the tube, and in 96 Ford switched to the 4.6 engine.

LOLLOL. So I got cooked on the headers then, huh. LOL. So much to learn. I have a friend who may have some tri-ys that he will sell me for cheap other wise I will just have to use the ones from my motor or spend a little more cash. Lol. Want some headers? LOL.

Just wipe it down and paint it. It's only gonna get dirty anyway.
