I have a 67 coupe, 302, 4-speed toploader. It shifts great upon take off, but every once in awhile, when coming to a stop, the clutch will disengage the trans from the engine, but I have a heck of a time putting it in first gear.

Sometimes, shaking the stick from left to right in the neutral gate helps, but it still takes a lot of effort to get it into any gear. I did notice that when coasting to a stop, I can press the clutch pedal in, move the stick from third to second and into first easily before coming to a complete stop (which I assume means the synchros are okay), but when I come to a stop, it takes Herculean strength to get it into any gear.

I guess I'll try to adjust the clutch linkage first, but am too tired after a day at the NHRA finals. It will have to wait for another day as the sun is out and time for the beach tomorrow.

Thanks for any opinions and for reading such a long post.

Oh,oh, just noticed the post number, could this be an omen?

My guess
worn clutch fork or
worn throw out bearing or
or worn forks in the tranny or
worn or bent linkage or worn plastic doomajiggys on the linkage
to much coffee
not enough coffee
g/f or wife sabotage

Possibly the fork, I've been thinking of changing it for awhile.

There is a rattle when stepping on clutch pedal, might be the throw out bearing.

Probably not the trans, shifts okay when sitting with engine off and when car moving.

Doomajiggys are new except for fork.

Not enough coffee, a possibility.

GF doesn't mind car, at least she knows the competition!

I had a similar problem but it wasn't the doomajiggys, it was the thingamajigs.

UPDATE:

After much swearing, the linkage is again adjusted per Ford Manual, but still no luck. Looks like a new/better clutch is in my future.

Edit #1: While driving after adjusting clutch free play, I noticed that still having hard time getting into gear after a stop, but if I turn off the engine, it'll slip right into gear easily. Now I'm really confused?

Okay, not Ford, but same type problem. Looks like it might be the clutch.

Sounds like the clutch is not fully disengaging..I had this problem with my pickup and even with the clutch adjusted so there was barely any freeplay it still didn't disengage fully.I couldn't see anything wrong with my old clutch to the naked eye but I installed a new one and it works great now.

Warped disk, oil soaked disk, usually oil soaked disk. Slip it real good till you smell
it. Let it cool off, and take it for a spin.
Then fix the oil leak!

Pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft could be spinning the input shaft causing the problem also.
