As much as I hate to admit it,, the lug nuts on my wheels came loose,, even after I had checked them..

The damage is done.. All but one of the nuts came off,, it is stripped and nothing I've tried workss to get it off the stud.. I can put a impact wrench on it and it just spins..

If I keep beating on it,, I know it will eventually come off,, but I was looking for some more "From Experience" answers to possibly get this little sucker off.. GRRRRRR

Well, you have no room for a nut buster, so if I were facing this task I think I'd take my diegrinder and carefully grind the lugnut off. I'd grind a slot on one side parallel to the stud, turn it 180 degrees and slot the other side, then finish it off by splitting it in two with a chisel.

If you can't get a grinder on the nut, I've removed lug nuts with a high speed drill bit and a good variable speed drill. Drill a series of holes in a line where you can and hit it with a cold chisel.

Thanks guys.. I was just heading out to try drilling it.. I possibly could cut a few holes with my dremel and a tungsten bit,, as long as I can hold on to it..

Sent a few pics to Vintage Wheel Works,, THey think we can save the wheel with insirts.. When I get it back,, I think I'll go ahead and buy another rim and use this one as a spare.. SAFETY FIRST..

One thing they said that was encouraging,, they told me to buy a blemished rim,, since I painted the spokes,, no one would ever know the diff..

Actually,, when I first got my rims,, I thought they were the blemished rims..

Later..

Some times it feels good to take a hammer to something.. But this is different,, I cringe everytime I swing the hammer and hit the chisel on the nut..

I would just add to tape some heavy paper over the wheel...will help keep the debris from the cutting wheel from tearing up the finish even more if you plan on re-using that wheel even for a spare.

NOW YOU TELL ME..

Actually,, I only gave it a couple of nicks it wouldn't have already received..

I basically drilled holes down two sides and split the lug nut with a chisel or any damned thing I could fit in the hole with out creating any additonal damage..

Let me say this about the job.. IT SUCKED.. LOL.. but,, at least I'm laughing now..

Thanks for you input guys..

William..

6T6 did good,, but I didn't get any pics.. Everyone was too busy racing.. NEXT TIME..

Just imagine a fastback sitting low to the ground sounding good.. Rolls up to the light.. Staging lights come on.. Tree Lights start working their way down the tree - almost to the last amber.. Then ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE - Hit 2nd - ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE AGAIN..

But,, the last time I saw that Camaro was when he faded BACK out of perifial vision..

Got to work on that traction portion.. CAL-TRACS are on top of my Christmas Wish List in case you get my name in the M&M Gift Exchange..

Just in case you are curious as to what happens to your wheels when the lug nut get loose..

Here's a picture of the back side of the center of my rim.. It's shows how much the holes were oblonged..

I'm amazed it didn't fall off,, but then it couldn't,, because it had 1 lugnut that wouldn't come off..

Tuff luck, Big D.
But at least you didn't do this:

-- A true story -- It was my first vehicle, a '63 F-100. I used it to haul firewood, hay, straw, etc. for gas & spending monies as a teenager. One Winter day I had it loaded down with firewood and as I was traveling along a snow-covered gravel road, my LR wheel came completely off & I saw it bounce off into the ditch in my rearview mirror! After I got the truck stopped (from about 45mph, and with the drum dragging on the road, it didn't take long), I got out to look at the wheel-less wheelwell, all the lugnuts were still on the studs! The wheel lug nuts had apparently loosened up some while I was driving in the woods they had wobbled around enough to completely PULL THROUGH the OEM steel rim holes!!!

I ended up jacking the beast up and with some very large 1/2" washers (obtained from a nearby farmer) I was able to reverse the lugnuts ('flat side' toward the washers/rims) and tighten the wheel back on and carefully drove home!

Ahh, yes, the good ol' days, No?

Go to a welding shop where they have
somebody that still knows what a cutting
torch is, and how to use one. With a old
oxy/acet torch, in the hands of someone
with talent, they can cut the offending
lug out without scratching your rim.
Total time after lighting torch. Under 1
minute.

Jake,, Hopefully it will never happen again,, but if it does,, I will give the torch a try..

Ryan,, That had to be something.. It's amazing you there wasn't more damage & you could even use the rim at all..

Year's ago I was watching my parents Mom&POP Gas Station & this Semi-Truck pulls in.. He was missing the rear duals off his truck's trailer..

He said he was driving down the highway,, which is mainly long strait stretches,, but when they went around curve he just happen to look back just as the duals came off and took off across the country side.. He said he thought they'd never stop.. The farther they went the high they'd bounce & it seemed they gained speed..

Anyway,, he told me he wouldn't care except they were brand new radials and was hoping I could take him back in my Pickup and try and find his tires & rims..

So we loaded up,, drove about 3o miles and he shows me the curve and the path the tires took.. We drove down the highway well over a mile from where he said they took off,, then we headed out through the desert.. I swear,, we found his tires about a mile and a half from the road.. Unbelievable.. There they were full of air,, just a little dusty..

We trough them in the back of my truck and headed back to town.. True Story..

-- Of course, once I arrived back home (~10 miles) I did junk out that rim. Had the incident occured on a paved road or even in the Summer, I'm sure the brake drum would of shattered and possibly even tore the rear axle loose from the frame... but because the road was covered in a layer of hard-packed snow, once the tire came off, it just dropped straight down and the lip of the brake drum simply scratched a heavy line on the hard-packed snow!

-- COOL STORY, DON! Can you imagine if there was somebody looking for insects or such, way way off the road, to look up and see that set of duals quietly roll on by...!! LOL!
