I took the engine out of my 65 hardtop to clean up the engine compartment and clean and repaint the engine. It is pretty much stock with the exception of the bottom end. The short block was replaced by the previous owner with a '71 mexican 302. The rest of the components are off of the 289.I took off the timing cover and the chain is in good shape. The compression was good, but I wonder what else I should look for while I have the engine out? Should I look at one of the rod bearings? I think I am going to take the heads off and have a valve, mild port, job done. The car is a weekend cruiser I've had for about 10 years now. I plan on putting headers and a new exhaust on her too. Thanks for listening. Nick

If you have gone that far, you might as well put a set of bearings in it! A new set of rings would be nice too. Look at the ridge at the top of the cylinders. Is it more than 10 thou's thick? If it is than you just might want to get it bored to the next oversize. You can usually get away with new rings if it's 10 or less. Make sure you cut the ridge out before you re-ring it. Just my opinion, not too far off, but follow at your own risk. KP

If nothing else, a new oil pump and shaft would be cheap and easy - well worth the piece of mind.------------------ '69 Mach I 351W FMX '67 Cpe 302

I'd vote for a new rear main seal, especially if your going to get into the bottom end.Sounds like the motor was in good shape though so whether you want to open it up or not is up to you.------------------ 68 J-Code,Sprint,306 4 speed,4.11s 13.69@101............... 66 coupe 289 4 speed, 3.20 cruiser http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy2.html

rear main for sure. Maybe the oil pan seal and valve cover seals? Cheap and help keep the engine and engine bay looking good. Any hoses that are old or worn.Richard. ------------------ rmousir '66 Mustang Ford Blue & white stripes 302 auto Mustang ~ 04-05

The rear main sounds like a good idea. The front seal on the timing cover was pretty crusty looking, so I better pull the flex plate and change the rear. The valve stem seals are shot too. Some of them are seated around the guides and some are floating on the stem. I am probably going to pull the heads of for a valve job. This way I can check the cylinder walls. What would be a ballpark figure for a valve job and maybe port the heads too??
