I replaced my timing cover with a new one and the gasket doesn't fit into it properly. The gasket material is too long for the cover, but it fits correctly in the old one. I tried cutting it some but ended up with a small leak. Any suggestions?

If the leak is at the oil pan seam, sounds like it needs a thicker bead of RTV. I also make a practice of dressing both sides of the t-cover gasket with a sealant, a light coat of RTV works well here too

Trick I have learned use nitrite gloves and you can squeeze silicon onto both sides of gasket use a minimal amount and it can be put on equally, best part is clean up, throw gloves in garbage instead of pulling silicon form fingers for a week.

Just get the right T-cover. You got the
wrong one. Small block Ford's are notorious
for that! No amount of "silicone" is gonna
make it right. Take your old one and the one
you got, and lay them side by side. Are they
identical? Yay or Nay.

Note- you can usually fix the old one.
If your changing it out cause the part
that seals around the water passages is all
corroded, JB-Weld has been sucessfully used
by many before. That's if you can't come by
the right one. If you do the JB-Weld, clean
it real good and scrape all the pits clean
with a pocket screwdriver or a dental pick.
Fill it up with the epoxy, and when it sets
up take a smooth file and level it down flat. Sit down, admire your work and have a
beer. You earned it.
