Well, contrary to my recent post about this I AM going to go ahead with the restoration this winter. What the heck, I have a great guy to do the work and a wife that supports the project so I'm excited about getting the car of my dreams. I will have LOTS of questions, so please bear with me.We'll get started in about 3 weeks. Tear it down, get it on the rotiserrie and see what it needs (most everything I expect). Then start building her back up. One thing I need to think about is paint colour - not for the car (it will be candy-apple red which is original for my car and my personal favourite), but for the underside and engine compartment. It will either be red, clearcoated like the rest of the car or the stock Ford black - what finish/paint is that anyway? My mechanic prefers the red but he's a Mopar guy and the Mopars use the car colour. What do you folks prefer? Please feel free to point me to pictures of your cars if you have them! I may regret this, but I am excited about it and can't wait to get started. Regards, Gregg ------------------ 68 coupe, red on black. http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/kinger44.html

hey Kinger....welcome to my nightmare...just kidding. I've been having a great time with my ground-up restoration. The beauty is when you get frustrated you just walk away and come back later. Give yourself lots of time and set realistic time goals. I've been working on mine for four years. I wound up painting the underside of mine with Eastwood Tools 'Chassis Black'. My feeling is that painting the underside the same color as the rest of the car makes it look too "cutomized" I wanted to keep mine very close to original. ------------------ Formerly ddenton749 '73 Convertible, 351C 2V '91 LX Convertible 5.0 Member: Valley Forge Mustang Club "The best things in life are free, but the really kick-a** things cost a fortune." How do you like the finish on that Chassis Black? When I did my car 12 years ago, I used rustoleum satin black, and while it held up well, I always hated the fact that the satin finish never looked clean. It always looked like it needed washed. Is the Chassis black a gloss, semi-gloss, satin, or flat? How easy do you think it will be to keep clean?

sig- The Chassis Black went on nice, but I don't know how it will look when it starts to get dirty. It's a semi (30% +/-) gloss and looks great.------------------ Formerly ddenton749 '73 Convertible, 351C 2V '91 LX Convertible 5.0 Member: Valley Forge Mustang Club "The best things in life are free, but the really kick-a** things cost a fortune." I can't give you a paint code but I prefer the black ,original look in the engine compartment compared to the body colour. On my 68 I just used some spray paint cans that I bought from Canadian Tire.It was some kind of gloss black ford truck paint and it came out very nice and shiny. The 66 coupe was painted with some kind of paint very similiar to por 15 but the guy told me it was used on Tug boats below the water line so it is obviously water proof and very tough as well. The pics are in my sig.------------------ 68 J-Code,Sprint,306 4 speed,4.11s 13.69@101............... 66 coupe 289 4 speed, 3.20 cruiser http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy2.html

For the bottom, if you have spray equipment, would use the DP series PPG epoxy primer. I think the no. for semit gloss black is 90, not sure. It will last indefinitely. If rattle cans are the answer, would use the Rustoleum primer and 7777 satin black. It gives off a strong smell and takes a solid day to dry but it's rugged. It's as good as the Eastwood Chassis Black and a lot cheaper. Color on the bottom is kinda crappy when it gets road film, mud, oil, etc. Semi gloss black is one of the MCA bottom finishes approved, if it matters. My 66 still had a lot of red oxide on it but I do not like it, so went satin black. The Ca. built 68 that I got originally had a color that looked like 69 Mustang Black Jade so it's satin black.

The directions on the can of of Chassis Black tell you that you don't need primer and to NOT use self-etching primer. I like how it turned out...just enough gloss. I need to update my site with pics that show it. I'll try to do it soon.In the mean-time I could email you a pic so you can see. ------------------ Formerly ddenton749 '73 Convertible, 351C 2V '91 LX Convertible 5.0 Member: Valley Forge Mustang Club "The best things in life are free, but the really kick-a** things cost a fortune."
