I have a pair of Kelsey Hayes bare calipers. I made a set of sst pistons and bought a boot and seal kit, new hoses and crossover lines. They also sell caliper piston retainers at $6.00 ea. x 8 pcs. What are these for and how are they installed? I see a groove at the top edge of the cylinder above the seal groove. Is this just like a snap ring to keep the piston in the caliper body?
Thanks for any info,
Glenn

Not sure on the 67 and earlier but the 68 and later just have a seal in the bore and the rubber boot.

I was just looking at an exploded view and it shows two seals and one boot per piston. I don?t see any kind of retainer.

Where did you find an exploded view? The kit I have only has 1 boot and 1 seal per piston.

My '67 calipers had 1 seal and 1 boot per cylinder. No retaining rings that I noticed.

How does the boot attach to the cylinder of the caliper? Does the piston just hold the boot on? Does the larger hole go in or out?
Thanks,
gf

there is a metal ring tht fits on the outside of the cyl bore. It holds the larger end of the boot

The larger hole of the boot goes towards the caliper and tucks into a groove with a lip machined on the caliper. The smaller hole on the boot tucks into the groove on the piston.

I found the exploded view on the Ford MPC cd that I have. I would send you a copy of the picture but I haven?t figured out how to do this other than printing it and then scanning it.

Ed, you can capture the viewable portion of whatever is on your computer screen by hitting CTRL SHIFT and PRINT SCREEN at the same time. Then you go into any microsoft or photo editing software, ie, Word, Powerpoint, Photoshop, etc, and hit paste or CTRL V and the screen shot is there as a picture. You can then crop the screenshot down to whatever it is you actually want.

The drawings would be cool, as I have scratched my head several times over trying to figure how these boots stay in the cylinder. I guess I need to buy the metal retaining rings because there is no way these boots will tuck inside the groove of the cylinder wall. They fit the piston great but just butt against the caliper face. I did find somewhat of a assembly view online but there was no retaining ring shown. It simply shows caliper halves, seals, boot, and hardware for holding the calipers together. Thanks for everyones help thusfar!!
