ok, I have a c4 auto. (in my 289 65') and over the past couple of joy rides it was wanting less and less to shift up to third, until last week it decided it wasnt going to at all. im hoping its because of the three different brands of transmission fluid that it use to hold before i realized i needed to use type F. im fillin her back up today, as soon as i pick up my new pan gasket, But with how much? ive been told you can only get 3-4 qts in at first, until it cycles through...and that c4s hold 8-9 qts...

so my 2 questions:
1)how many qts of type f will i need to purchase and
2)what could be causing my transmission failure

1st and 2nd still work, but i really dont like driving around at 4000 + rpms

thanks for your input

I would think you needed to get all of the old fluid out first. That's going to take more than just dropping the pan. The torque converter is full of fluid as well as the valve body. If your converter has a drain plug, that will take care of it but you'll need to drop the valve body as well. That's just my thinking on the subject. Others may have better info.

If the fluid wasn't the problem, sounds like a vacuum modulator.

Where in VA Beach are you?

I'm in Lake Placid near the intersection of Damn Neck and London Bridge.

You may have a sticky governor or one that is on it's way out the door. I'd drain the converter, change the filter, and put the correct fluid in there.

To fill an empty tranny (with empty converter), pour in 4 quarts, then start engine. These will be pumped into the torque converter, so immediatley add 3 more qts. while it is running. Still while running, put the tranny in all of the gears to be sure they all "catch" and circulate fluid.

Look under the car to check for leaks.

Put in park and while still running check fluid. It will be low. Add fluid until full.

J,
Sounds like you have things covered so far. I would also check into replacing the vaccum shift modulator. They aren't expensive and aren't hard to replace. If you need help just post. Several members here in the Hampton Roads area. Have tools, manuals and will travel to help another mustang owner.

Jay,
You may need to have the bands adjusted. But as we have all suggested, start with the simple stuff, like changing the fluid and modulator. If that doesn't work, then it's time for the nest step. Take it to a shop and tell them what the problem is and ask them to adjust the bands.

Either you lost high gear "3rd" clutch,
or you got stuck shift valve. If modulator
was stuck, you would be in first all the time.Get a manual and drop the pan. Is it
full of junk, like old coffee grounds? If
not pull the valve body and go thru it.
It ain't all that hard to ck out. Just get
all the valves in it freed up, an mind you
you got a book handy when you put it back
together. C4's are a piece of cake.

Sam,
He got it straight. Talked to him Saturday night at Jenro's. Turns out the vaccum line from the intake to the shift modulator came off. He replaced the modulator and flexible tube. All is well now.
