I changed the oil in the 289 and put in 5 litres with a new oil filter. It was reading about a 1/4 inch above the full mark on the dipstick.I'm sure the stick and pan are original so I'm wondering what the actual oil capacity is supposed to be?I believe a liter is slightly less than a quart.

The actual capacity with filter change is 5 quarts. This equals 4.730368968779565 liters. Check to see if the dipstick tube has been replaced, they are very difficult to get fully seated and will cause a low oil reading on the dipstick.

Thanks for the quick reply. So it looks like I'm overfilling it a little by about 1/4 of a liter or so.I wouldn't have thought that small of an amount would have registered so high up on the dipstick .

Did you start the car up before checking it?
Oil might not have found its way to the filter yet.

Yes I had actually driven the car a little.I have the same type reading on my 68 but it has an aftermarket chrome dipstick and tube so I thought it might not be reading correctly.

The 1971 Boss 351 had a re-calibrated dipstick to show full with six quarts. The pan was the same. I don't see how an extra half quart is going to hurt. I used the same trick on the 429 I built for my '78 F-150. The motor now has 220,000 miles on it.

Actually the oil does hurt the crank. Not just the extra oil but the oil you already have in there, as the crank turns it "slaps" thru the oil robbing you of horsepower. Ford added a windage tray to the boss 302 and claimed 25 h.p. increase. The 25 h.p. gained seems a bit high to me for this simple mod which is basically a baffle but at a higher rpm I could possibly see it appllying.

Did you use the FL1 type filter or the short one? The short one hold about a half a quart less.

Willy, I always put in 4 liters,(with filter change) run the engine, check for leaks,(and oil pressure) wait 5 minutes, check again and add a half liter, check again. I always keep the level a bit below full. Save the remainder of the oil for top up.

I'm using the long style filter...I guess I'll take pmhvps advice and pour in 4 litres and then fine tune it from there.
