I finally got back up to the bodyshop today and got the vin plate riveted back on the back of driver's side door. The wierd part is they also have another vin tag that is very similiar to the one that is riveted on the door but it has no holes in it so it must have been glued on or something.Anyone know where this is supposed to go?This car was absolutely stripped right down to the bare shell so it could be from anywhere. ------------------ 1968 mustang j-code sprint.13.69@101 306cu.in, stock ported heads, weiand exellerator,650 holley DP,hedman hedders, comp 292 Magnum cam,4-speed,8 inch 4.11 detroit locker...................................................................1966 mustang coupe project.289 4 speed,3.20 rear http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html

Where was your Mustang built??? If it was built in Metuchen NJ, you could be talking about a "Body Buck Tag". The buck tag was normally located in the engine compartment and was used to tell people on the assembly line what was to be put in the car. Does the plate have serated edges and bunch of different letters, numbers and funny shapes cut out of it??? None of our mustangs has one, but I'm sure there are a few members here at M&M that do have them. Take a picture of the tag if you could and we should be able to tell you for sure. Hope this helps.Dave & Terri ------------------ '65 Mustang Fastback '66 Mustang Coupe '02 Explorer XLT Common sense isn't common anymore.

No it's not a buck tag(my 68 has one). Its perfectly smooth around the edges and has no holes in it at all.It basically looks like the one that rivets on the door except it is slightly smaller. It has no paint on it all just the stamped numbers the same as the vin plate with the trans code, rear axle paint etc.The car was built in Dearborn.

I think I know what you are talking about, I've got one of those laying around. No black on it, just a plain piece of stamped metal (aluminum?). If I can find it, I'll take a pic and post it. Not sure where it came from out of the car though.

Is this off your '66??? I stripped my '66 down completely and I only found the tag on the driver's door, the stamps in the fender aprons, and the buck tag (which is obviously screwed to the fender apron on the driver's side - but you know that). Unless I missed one on mine (or unless you have a Shelby) that should be it. Have you checked to make sure your fender aprons are original with the matching VIN on both and the door tag as well? Do these match your mystery tag? Is your title clear - or is it a salvage title?

That was part of the card that was run through a machine at the service desk when bringing car in for service. Often, the metal part got detached and was often found in the gove cmpt. The card was in the envelope that the owners manual, etc. was in when car was delivered. I have a set for a 68.

Yep, that's the metal plate off the warranty card, usually kept in the glovebox.

I don't know where the bodyshop guys would have found this tag?...I had already stripped out the interior of the car.Anyway I guess it doesn't matter as long as it's not supposed to go on the car somewhere. Thanks for the help guys
